NYPD Officer Didarul Islam Honored as New York's Finest After Midtown Tragedy

A Tragic Loss in New York City
New York City is deeply mourning the loss of an NYPD officer and three other individuals who were killed during a shooting at an office building in Midtown Manhattan. The incident occurred on Monday, and the city is now grappling with the emotional impact of the tragedy.
Officer Didarul Islam, who was 36 years old, was working as a security guard for a private company when the shooting took place. He had been with the NYPD for three and a half years and was assigned to the 47th Precinct in the Bronx. His colleagues and community members have come together to honor his memory, with bunting displayed in his honor early Tuesday morning.
The suspect, Shane Tamura, reportedly entered the building at 345 Park Ave. with a high-power rifle and opened fire. In addition to Officer Islam, three others were killed, and one person was hospitalized with critical injuries. Tamura later died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to police.
A dignified transfer was held late Monday into Tuesday, as Islam's body was taken away in an ambulance. Community members, elected officials, and local leaders stood along the street, placing their hands over their hearts in a show of respect. Another dignified transfer took place on Tuesday, as his body was moved from the medical examiner’s office to a mosque in the Bronx.
Leadership Responds to the Tragedy
New York City Mayor Eric Adams and New York Gov. Kathy Hochul both issued statements expressing their condolences and calling for an end to the violence. Adams ordered all flags on city buildings to fly at half-staff in honor of Islam and the other victims. Hochul followed suit, directing flags to be flown at half-staff across the state.
Hochul stated, “The violence we witnessed at the hands of this individual is sickening, unacceptable, and it must stop here.” She emphasized that an attack on one person is an attack on all, urging the public to confront violence head-on. Both the mayor and governor visited the 47th Precinct to pay their respects.
Family and friends are planning a funeral for Officer Islam, who was described as a hero by those who knew him. He was an immigrant from Bangladesh and the only son of his parents. He was a husband and father of two boys, and his wife was eight months pregnant with their third child. Hochul praised him on social media, stating he “represented the very best of New York.”
A Community in Grief
Adams described Islam as a true-blue New Yorker who loved his city and dedicated himself to protecting its people. NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch also expressed her sorrow, calling the officer a brother and emphasizing the importance of his sacrifice.
Officer Islam lived in the Parkchester section of the Bronx, where neighbors and family members are struggling with the overwhelming grief. Mourners have been coming to pay their respects, and some residents shared how they heard the news being delivered to his family. One neighbor described hearing the children crying and feeling the sadness in the air.
Islam’s father suffered a medical episode after learning of his son’s death, and the family is still recovering. His youngest son, who is four years old, is having difficulty understanding the loss, while his eldest son has been seen carrying his father’s police book.
The Suspect and the Investigation
Shane Tamura, the 27-year-old suspect, is under investigation for the shooting. According to Mayor Adams, it appears Tamura targeted the NFL headquarters but took the wrong elevator. He left behind a note mentioning CTE, a brain injury often associated with athletes, which he appeared to blame on the NFL.
An NFL employee was seriously wounded in the incident, and the league has since instructed its New York employees to work from home. Blackstone confirmed that one of its employees, Wesley LePatner, was among the victims. The company described him as a brilliant and respected individual.
Other victims included security officer Aland Etienne and Rudin Management employee Julia Hyman. Preliminary findings suggest that Tamura traveled from Las Vegas to New York City, drove across the country, and then carried out the attack. An M4 rifle was recovered from the scene, and investigators believe he acted alone.
Tamura had a documented mental health history and was found with prescription medications in his car. Law enforcement in Las Vegas is assisting with the investigation.
