NYPD Officer and 3 Others Killed in Midtown Manhattan Shooting

Tragedy Strikes Midtown Manhattan
A tragic shooting occurred on Monday evening in a Midtown Manhattan office building, where a gunman armed with a high-powered rifle killed a New York City police officer and three other individuals. The suspect, identified as Shane D. Tamura, 27, from Las Vegas, died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to authorities.
NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch shared details about the incident, including surveillance footage showing Tamura exiting a double-parked black BMW alone on Park Avenue between 51st and 52nd streets just before 6:30 p.m. He was seen carrying an M4 rifle in his right hand and entering the 44-story building at 345 Park Ave. Upon entry, he immediately began firing on an NYPD officer.
Multiple 911 calls were received shortly after, indicating an active shooter inside the building. The structure houses offices for major companies such as Blackstone, the NFL, and KPMG.
New York City Mayor Eric Adams mentioned that it appears the suspect may have targeted the NFL offices but used the wrong elevator. While no official confirmation has been made, this detail adds to the complexity of the situation.
A Hero’s Final Act
One of the victims was NYPD Officer Didarul Islam, 36, who worked out of the 47th Precinct in the Bronx. A four-year veteran of the force, Didarul was on a paid detail as part of a program allowing officers to provide extra security for private companies. He leaves behind a pregnant wife and two young sons.
Mayor Adams described Didarul as an immigrant from Bangladesh who loved New York City. "He was an immigrant from Bangladesh and he loved this city," Adams said. "Everyone we spoke with stated he was a person of faith and a person that believed in God and believed in living out the life of a godly person."
Adams also mentioned that three people who work in the building were killed, and another man is in critical condition. He called the shooting "a violent, despicable attack" and expressed deep sorrow over the loss of life.
Details from the Investigation
According to officials, after shooting the officer, the gunman shot a woman taking shelter behind a pillar and then proceeded through the lobby, spraying it with gunfire. He then made his way to the elevator bank, shooting a security guard who had taken cover behind the desk.
The police commissioner noted that during the incident, the gunman waited for an elevator and allowed a woman to walk by unharmed when she emerged. He then took the elevator to the 33rd floor, where one of the victims was shot and killed.
Afterward, the gunman proceeded down the hallway and shot himself in the chest. Authorities believe this was a lone shooter, and there is no longer an active threat to the public.
Background on the Suspect
Tisch revealed that the vehicle Tamura exited on Park Avenue was registered to him. Inside, officers found a rifle case with rounds, a loaded revolver, ammunition, magazines, a backpack, and medication prescribed to Tamura. No explosives were discovered.
According to law enforcement in Las Vegas, Tamura had a documented mental health history. However, the motive remains under investigation.
After the shooting, the building was placed on lockdown, and the area was blocked off. The NYPD and Mayor Adams urged the public to avoid the vicinity of East 52nd Street between Park Avenue and Lexington Avenue.
A Community in Mourning
Police Benevolent Association President Patrick Hendry reflected on the tragedy, calling it a devastating night for the city and its police department. He described the incident as "pure evil" coming to the heart of the city and striking innocent people.
Hendry emphasized the loss of Officer Didarul Islam, who gave his life protecting others. "We lost four people tonight, and our hero brother, who gave his life for this city," he said.
The hearts of every New York City police officer are hurting, Hendry added. "We're hurting for our brother police officer who we lost. We're hurting for that family. We're hurting for all the victims, and hurting for all the families of the victims."
As the investigation continues, the community mourns the loss of four lives and reflects on the impact of this senseless act of violence.
