NYC Police Officer, 3 Others Killed in Midtown Shooting; Gunman Dead

Tragedy Strikes Midtown Manhattan
A tragic incident unfolded in Midtown Manhattan on Monday evening when a gunman, armed with a high-powered rifle, opened fire inside a 44-story office building on Park Avenue. The attack resulted in the deaths of four individuals, including an NYPD officer, and left another man in critical condition.
The suspect, identified as Shane D. Tamura, 27, from Las Vegas, was found dead at the scene from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. According to NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch, surveillance footage captured Tamura exiting a double-parked black BMW alone on Park Avenue between 51st and 52nd streets just before 6:30 p.m. He was carrying an M4 rifle in his right hand and entered the building at 345 Park Ave., where he immediately began shooting.
Multiple 911 calls were received shortly after, confirming an active shooter inside the building. The structure houses offices for major companies such as Blackstone, the NFL, and KPMG. While the motive behind the attack remains under investigation, it appears that Tamura may have targeted the NFL offices but used the wrong elevator.
The Officer Who Gave His Life
Among those killed was NYPD Officer Didarul Islam, 36, who was working out of the 47th Precinct in the Bronx. A four-year veteran of the force, Didarul was on a paid detail as part of a program allowing officers to provide security for private companies. He leaves behind a pregnant wife and two young sons.
New York City Mayor Eric Adams expressed deep sorrow over the loss, describing Didarul as a true-blue New Yorker. “He was doing what he does best, and all members of the police department carry out. He was saving lives. He was protecting New Yorkers,” Adams said. He also highlighted Didarul’s background as an immigrant from Bangladesh and his strong faith.
Adams confirmed that three other individuals who worked in the building were also killed, while another man remains in critical condition. He called the shooting “a violent, despicable attack” and emphasized the emotional toll it has taken on the city.
Details of the Shooting
According to officials, after shooting the officer, the gunman shot a woman taking shelter behind a pillar and then proceeded through the lobby, spraying it with gunfire. He later made his way to the elevator bank, where he shot a security guard who had taken cover behind the desk.
At one point, the gunman waited for an elevator, and when it arrived, a woman emerged, but he allowed her to walk by unharmed. He then took the elevator to the 33rd floor, where he continued firing as he moved down the hallway. One of the victims was shot and killed on that floor before he ultimately turned the gun on himself.
Background on the Gunman
Tisch revealed that the vehicle Tamura exited on Park Avenue was registered to him. Inside the car, officers found a rifle case containing rounds, a loaded revolver, ammunition, magazines, a backpack, and medication prescribed to Tamura. No explosives were discovered.
Preliminary findings suggest that Tamura drove across the country to reach New York City, traveling through Colorado on Saturday, Nebraska and Iowa on Sunday, and passing through Columbia, New Jersey, at 4:24 p.m. on Monday. According to law enforcement in Las Vegas, Tamura had a documented mental health history, though his motive remains under investigation.
Response and Aftermath
Following the incident, the building was placed on lockdown, and the area was blocked off. Police advised the public to avoid the vicinity of East 52nd Street between Park Avenue and Lexington Avenue. Officers from the NYPD's Special Operations Division conducted a secondary sweep of the building.
Tisch clarified that the incident is believed to be the work of a lone shooter, with no ongoing threat to the public. “We believe this to be a lone shooter and there is no longer an active threat to the public,” she stated.
Reactions from Law Enforcement
Police Benevolent Association President Patrick Hendry spoke about the tragedy, reflecting on the dedication of Officer Didarul Islam. “Pure evil came to the heart of our city and struck innocent people and one of our police officers who was protecting those people,” Hendry said. He described the loss as devastating and emphasized the impact on the entire NYPD family.
Hendry noted that the loss of Islam would serve as a motivator for the ongoing investigation. “The hearts of every New York City police officer right now are hurting,” he said. “We’re hurting for our brother police officer who we lost. We’re hurting for that family. We’re hurting for all the victims, and hurting for all the families of the victims.”
As the city mourns the loss of four New Yorkers, the focus remains on understanding the events that led to this tragedy and supporting the affected families.
