Nostalgia on Wheels at the Dream Cruise

The Allure of Classic Cars: A Journey Through Time
Classic cars have always held a special place in the hearts of many. Whether it's nostalgia, style, or simply the joy of driving something unique, people are drawn to these vintage vehicles for a variety of reasons. At the 30th annual Woodward Dream Cruise, one of the most anticipated events for car enthusiasts, thousands gathered along the 17-mile stretch of Woodward Avenue from Pontiac to Ferndale. Despite the sweltering heat, the passion for classic cars remained undiminished.
Nostalgia and Passion Fuel Classic Car Enthusiasm
John Raimer, a lifelong car enthusiast, found his way back to the past when he discovered his 1964 Pontiac GTO 455. After graduating from John Glenn High School in Westland in 1973, Raimer lived in Keystone Heights, Florida, for over 40 years. When a friend suggested they find the cars they drove in high school, Raimer began his search. After three years of looking, he finally found his dream car on Facebook Marketplace. He bought it for $25,000 and has been driving it up to Michigan for a week each year to relive his high school days.
Raimer wanted his GTO to be road-ready with minimal repairs. Unlike some collectors who enjoy the restoration process, he preferred a car that was ready to drive. “I tried to restore a 1978 motorcycle I had. It’s still at my house with all the parts laying on the ground beside it,” he said. “I learned my lesson from the motorcycle and I said I am not getting a project car.”
A Unique Addition to the Classic Car Scene
Bruce Brigham, another participant in the event, took a different approach to classic car ownership. His journey into the world of classics began with a 1971 Chevy Camaro SS, which he owned for 25 years. After undergoing several neck surgeries, he decided to sell it, thinking his days of owning classic cars were over. However, two years later, he felt the urge to get back into the hobby.
He found a 1928 Ford Model A Roadster on Facebook Marketplace and purchased it for $13,500. While the Model A is much smaller than some of the other classics on display, Brigham sees it as a unique addition to his collection. He spent around $3,000 to $4,000 to refurbish the car, including modifying the engine to add more horsepower.
The original 1928 Ford Model A Roadster Pickup came equipped with a 201-cubic inch inline-four engine producing 40 horsepower. Brigham upgraded it with three carburetors and a different intake manifold, giving it a bit more power. This was his first year bringing the car to the Dream Cruise, and he was pleased with the attention it received.
“I feel like it fits in with these muscle cars out here, but it is definitely unique,” Brigham said. “As long as I own it, I will keep coming back every year.”
A Growing Community of Classic Car Lovers
The Woodward Dream Cruise is more than just an event; it's a celebration of automotive history and community. Attendees like Alyssa Burns, who traveled from Grand Rapids to see the event, highlight the appeal of the classic car scene. “I’ve lost track of how many pictures I’ve taken today. There are just so many cool cars out here,” she said. “I like the big old Cadillacs and Impalas. They just have more character.”
For many, the event is about more than just the cars. It's about connecting with others who share the same passion and celebrating the legacy of these iconic vehicles. Whether it's a sleek muscle car or a vintage pickup, each vehicle tells a story and contributes to the rich tapestry of automotive culture.
The Joy of Driving Vintage Vehicles
While some classic car owners focus on restoration and preservation, others, like Raimer, appreciate the thrill of driving a well-maintained classic. For him, the 1964 Pontiac GTO is more than just a car—it's a connection to his youth. “I just wanted to hot rod again,” he said. “I just wanted something where I could put my foot into the gas pedal and go fast.”
Raimer also expressed a newfound appreciation for the car he once drove as a teenager. “I love this car. It just feels right,” he said. “It is more meaningful to have this car now. It is just a great feeling.”
The Woodward Dream Cruise continues to bring together car lovers from all walks of life, offering a glimpse into the past while celebrating the enduring appeal of classic vehicles. Whether you're a seasoned collector or a casual observer, there's something special about watching these timeless machines roll down the road.
