Natalie Corona's Splash Pad Grand Opening Aug. 16
A Celebration of Life and Community at Natalie’s Corner Splash Pad
The City of Davis is set to host a memorable event as it celebrates the grand opening of Natalie’s Corner Splash Pad. This special occasion, titled “Making a Splash for Natalie,” will take place on Saturday, August 16, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. in Central Park. The event is open to all and aims to honor the legacy of a dedicated public servant while providing a fun and inclusive space for families.
Natalie Corona, a beloved member of the Davis Police Department, was tragically killed in the line of duty on January 10, 2019. She was investigating a multi-vehicle crash near downtown Davis when she was shot and killed. Before her untimely death, Corona had been with the department since 2016, initially serving as a community services officer. She had recently graduated from the Sacramento Police Department’s Training Academy and had aspirations to continue her career in law enforcement.
In the months leading up to her death, Corona faced financial challenges as the department could no longer afford to pay her. Despite this, she continued to serve as an unpaid volunteer, demonstrating her unwavering commitment to her community. A graduate of Woodland Community College, where she studied administration of justice, Corona was also a native of Arbuckle, having graduated from Pierce High School in 2014.
Following her passing, the Natalie Corona Committee was formed in 2020 to recommend a place of remembrance for her. In December 2021, the City of Davis received a significant $2.7 million grant from the Statewide Park Development and Community Revitalization Grant Program to renovate Central Park. This funding played a crucial role in the development of Natalie’s Corner.
In November 2022, the Davis City Council approved the naming of the splash pad as “Natalie’s Corner” and authorized the committee to assist in fundraising efforts for the project. Construction began in August 2024, marking a significant milestone in the community’s tribute to Corona.
The grand opening will be hosted by Bob Dunning and will include remarks from City of Davis Vice Mayor Donna Neville and Chair of the Natalie Corona Committee Lois Wolk. Attendees can enjoy live music, a countdown to officially open the splash pad, and light refreshments. It is recommended that guests bring hats or sunscreen to stay comfortable during the festivities.
Natalie’s Corner will be free and open daily from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. during the summer. The facility includes:
- A new, interactive water feature and gathering space for all ages
- An ultraviolet disinfection system, reducing the need for chemical treatment of the water and allowing for safe water re-use
- Biofiltration basins to capture storm water and increase groundwater recharge
- New pollinator gardens and educational displays
- Public art honoring Natalie Corona
- Benches, picnic tables, and low-wall seating
- Shade structures
The Natalie Corona Committee, led by former Davis Mayor Lois Wolk, has been actively raising funds to support the project. To date, the committee has raised over $550,000.
