These two ninjas, despite facing each other only a few times, have created some of the most memorable battles in the history of the series. Their rivalry is central to the story of Naruto, which is widely regarded as one of the best fighting anime ever made.

Throughout the series, Naruto makes it seem like the battle between the two is a true even match. Their first duel at the end of Naruto Part 1 is extremely close, with Sasuke emerging victorious. Later, during the Shippuden arc, their final showdown ends in a draw, with Naruto technically winning because Sasuke chooses to surrender.

However, when looking beyond the outcomes of these fights, it becomes clear that one of the two ninjas holds a significant advantage over the other.

Why Naruto and Sasuke Appear So Evenly Matched

Masashi Kishimoto, the creator of Naruto, does an impressive job making the rivalry between Naruto and Sasuke seem balanced. By the end of Shippuden, both characters have access to some of the most powerful techniques in the entire series. For instance, Naruto gains the Sage of Six Paths form from Hagoromo, while Sasuke acquires the Rinnegan. Both abilities significantly boost their already formidable skills.

In addition, they both have access to the tailed beasts, which further enhances their power. During their fight, Sasuke manages to absorb chakra from all nine tailed beasts, allowing him to create a powerful version of Susanoo that can stand up to Naruto’s Tailed Beast Mode.

Their martial skills are also fairly equal, leading many fans to believe that the two are evenly matched. This perception is reinforced by the fact that their final battle ends in a draw, with both using their signature attacks—Rasengan and Chidori—to take each other out.

The Hidden Truth: Naruto Is Actually Stronger

Despite the apparent balance, there are several reasons why Naruto is actually the stronger of the two. One key factor is their motivations for fighting. Sasuke sees Naruto as the main obstacle to his goal of destroying the corrupt system that led to the death of his family. To Sasuke, Naruto must die for him to achieve his revenge.

On the other hand, Naruto fights to save his friend, believing that there is still good in the last Uchiha. This mindset leads him to fight defensively, trying to avoid seriously injuring Sasuke. His reluctance to kill Sasuke is what keeps them on equal footing during the early stages of their battle.

Naruto's Hesitation Is the Only Thing Keeping Them Even

Even when Sasuke is down, Naruto hesitates to deliver the final blow. Instead of using his Tailed Beast Ball to end the fight, he refrains from doing so, which frustrates Sasuke. This hesitation stems from Naruto’s desire to redeem his friend rather than kill him.

This dynamic puts Naruto at a disadvantage, as his techniques are not designed for non-lethal combat. He has to find creative ways to use his jutsu without causing serious harm. However, this changes when Sasuke uses Indra’s Arrow, forcing Naruto to finally go all out.

From that point on, it becomes clear that Naruto was holding back earlier in the fight. If he had wanted to kill Sasuke, he likely could have done so much sooner.

Baryon Mode Makes the Debate Obvious

While the debate over who is stronger between Naruto and Sasuke has continued for years, it was Naruto’s appearance in Boruto: Naruto Next Generations that truly settled the matter. In this new series, Naruto achieves his most powerful form yet—Baryon Mode.

With Baryon Mode, Naruto’s strength, speed, and reflexes are enhanced to an almost supernatural level. This form allows him to drain the life force of any opponent upon contact, making it one of the most devastating techniques in the Naruto universe.

Sasuke, while still a formidable fighter, hasn’t developed any game-changing abilities in Boruto. His new techniques, such as the Lorentz Gun, are impressive but nowhere near the power output of Baryon Mode.

The Practical Limitations of Baryon Mode

Despite its overwhelming power, Baryon Mode comes at a steep cost. It drains Naruto’s energy reserves to the point where Kurama, the Nine-Tails, sacrifices himself to save the Seventh Hokage. Because of this, Naruto rarely uses Baryon Mode, reserving it as a last resort.
