Napier Reveals Gators' Injury Updates and Key Returns

Injury Updates and Player Returns for Florida Gators
As the Florida Gators begin their fall camp, head coach Billy Napier shared updates on several players who will be limited during the early stages of training. These updates highlight both challenges and progress within the team.
Among the players listed are five athletes from the 2025 roster: quarterback DJ Lagway, offensive lineman TJ Dice Jr., linebacker Grayson Howard, receiver Kahleil Jackson, and running back Treyaun Webb. According to Napier, these players are currently in a "return to play" phase and will have modified participation as they work their way back to full strength.
Lagway is the most notable player in this group. He has faced multiple injuries since arriving on campus, including a shoulder issue, a hamstring injury, and a reported hernia. Recently, he suffered a lower-body injury that required him to wear a boot. However, Napier expressed optimism about his recovery. "He's day-to-day," Napier said. "We're about a week removed, and he's made a lot of quick progress. It will be something we monitor, but I believe he'll be able to participate more each opportunity moving forward."
Dice's injury remains undisclosed, while Howard, Jackson, and Webb all recovered from season-ending injuries last year. Jackson tore his ACL after Florida’s season-opening loss to Miami and had surgery over the offseason. Howard has been dealing with a soft tissue issue that originated during a November game against Texas, and Webb underwent surgery for a fractured tibia last November after missing four games.
Despite these challenges, the Gators received some positive news regarding defensive back Aaron Gates. Gates, who tore his ACL during a win over Ole Miss, is on track to return this season. Napier noted that Gates has been a full participant in recent practices. "He's been a full participant here as of late," Napier said. "He's had an incredible road back and is a great example of how to approach rehab. He looks great and will be a valuable player for us."
Another player making a strong comeback is defensive lineman Jamari Lyons. After missing all of last season due to a broken ankle, Lyons participated in spring camp in a limited capacity and did not play in the spring game. Strength and conditioning coach Tyler Miles praised his efforts. "For him to come back from that kind of injury and not give up is impressive," Miles said. "He kept pushing through and had a great offseason, gaining muscle and not holding back at all."
The Gators are preparing for their first practice of fall camp, which will take place on Wednesday. With several players working their way back to full health, the team is focused on building momentum and setting the stage for the upcoming season.
Key Players and Their Recovery Status
- DJ Lagway: Dealing with a lower-body injury, currently in a boot but expected to make a full recovery.
- TJ Dice Jr.: Injury details remain unknown, but he is being monitored closely.
- Grayson Howard: Recovering from a soft tissue issue sustained in a previous game.
- Kahleil Jackson: Underwent ACL surgery and is progressing well.
- Treyaun Webb: Recovered from a fractured tibia and is showing signs of improvement.
- Aaron Gates: On schedule to return, having completed ACL rehabilitation successfully.
- Jamari Lyons: Overcame a severe ankle injury and is now fully participating in training.
With these updates, the Gators are entering fall camp with a mix of challenges and optimism. The team is focused on ensuring that injured players receive the necessary care and support while maintaining a competitive edge as they prepare for the season ahead.
