Cochise County Sheriff’s Office, led by Sheriff Mark Dannels, has long been at the forefront of border management. The region is known for its difficult geography, including towering peaks like Miller Peak (9,470 feet) and Chiricahua Peak (9,795 feet), which make traditional law enforcement and rescue efforts particularly complex. To address these challenges, the county is turning to cutting-edge drone technology developed by Draganfly Inc., a company specializing in custom-built aerial systems.

Custom Drones for Extreme Conditions

Most commercial drones have limitations in terms of battery life and altitude, making them less effective in high-elevation areas. However, Draganfly’s hybrid drones are designed to overcome these obstacles. The system features a 9-foot-long aircraft equipped with both combustion engines and battery power, allowing it to remain airborne for up to seven hours and travel at speeds of 75 miles per hour. This extended range and endurance make the drones ideal for monitoring vast stretches of the border and responding quickly to emergencies.

Cameron Chell, cofounder and CEO of Draganfly, highlighted the collaboration with Cochise County as a natural fit. “We were aware of Cochise County because they do such groundbreaking border management work,” he said. “As we had the opportunity to meet with them, there was immediately a ‘bromance’ that emerged for the amount of border management work that we have done in the past, the expertise, and our ability to listen and learn from them.”

Expanding Capabilities Beyond Surveillance

The drones are not just for monitoring; they are also being considered for active support in search and rescue missions. In cases where hikers or migrants become stranded in remote areas, the drones could deliver essential supplies such as water, food, or emergency equipment. Additionally, with the right communication systems, the drones can help "hold people in place" during critical situations, providing a crucial advantage for law enforcement.

Chell emphasized the potential impact of these drones on law enforcement effectiveness. “If you have a situation where you’re trying to stop someone from crossing or you’re trying to hold them in place until someone can get there, or there’s an emergency situation and they need equipment, the possibilities for it to come in to help are immense. It is a great force multiplier,” he said.

A Strategic Investment for the Future

Cochise County officials have expressed enthusiasm about the pilot program, which is set to begin in November. The initiative represents a significant step forward in integrating advanced technology into border security and emergency response.
