New Details Emerge from the Murders of Four University of Idaho Students

The tragic and brutal murders of four University of Idaho students have finally been exposed in a new light, as hundreds of previously confidential documents were released by the Moscow Police Department. These records, which include a general summary of the case and over 300 additional reports, offer an in-depth look at the events that led to the deaths of Kaylee Goncalves, Madison Mogen, Xana Kernodle, and Ethan Chapin.

The documents reveal disturbing details about the crime scene, including descriptions of blood-soaked bedding, pools of blood on the floors, and traumatic injuries sustained by the victims. The information was kept private for nearly three years, but it has now come to light following the sentencing of Bryan Kohberger, who received multiple life sentences for his crimes.

Kohberger, a 30-year-old man, admitted to the murders during a plea deal aimed at avoiding the death penalty. He targeted the group of students who lived together in an off-campus home on King Road in Moscow. On the early morning of November 13, 2022, he entered their residence and carried out the violent attacks that left all four victims dead.

Descriptions of the Crime Scene

Police officers who arrived at the scene described a harrowing sight. One officer wrote that they struggled to comprehend what they were seeing, as the nature of the injuries was so severe. Another account detailed how friends and roommates outside the home were in distress, and upon entering, the police found the bodies of the four victims.

One friend, who had gone to check on the situation after being alerted by surviving roommates, described finding the door partially open. As he entered the house, he initially thought the mess was from a night out, but soon realized the severity of the situation. He called for help and checked the victims’ pulses, only to find that they were already cold and unresponsive.

Specific Details About Each Victim

The reports provide specific accounts of each victim's condition at the time of discovery. Xana Kernodle, who was found in her bedroom with her boyfriend Ethan Chapin, had numerous wounds across her arms, hands, and face. Her body showed signs of defensive injuries, indicating she had fought back against the attacker. Chapin, lying in bed with a blanket over him, had deep cuts on the back of his legs.

On the third floor, Kaylee Goncalves and Madison Mogen were found in the same bed. Mogen had wounds on her face and upper body, while Goncalves suffered extreme injuries that made her unrecognizable. According to one report, she had been stabbed 34 times.

Medical Examiner’s Findings

The medical examiner provided critical insights into the cause of death for each victim. Chapin died from a stab wound to the neck that severed vital veins and arteries. Kernodle succumbed to lacerations to her heart and lungs, and she had more than 50 stab wounds, most of which were defensive. Mogen died from injuries to her liver and left lung, while Goncalves had both sharp and blunt force trauma, including a lung laceration and severed subclavian vein and artery.
