Prime Minister Keir Starmer Hosts Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a Significant Diplomatic Visit

Prime Minister Keir Starmer has welcomed Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the United Kingdom on Thursday, marking a pivotal moment in bilateral relations. The visit comes as both leaders prepare to sign a recently announced UK-India trade deal, which is expected to significantly boost economic ties between the two nations.

Modi's visit to Britain marks his fourth trip since becoming India’s leader in 2014. During his brief stay, he will also meet with King Charles III, reinforcing the longstanding relationship between the UK and India. This meeting is not only symbolic but also strategic, as it underscores the importance of maintaining strong diplomatic channels between the two countries.

One of the key issues that is expected to come up during the talks is the tragic Air India disaster that occurred last month. The crash, which took place when a London-bound flight departed from Ahmedabad in western India, resulted in the loss of 241 lives. Among the victims were 169 Indian passengers and 52 British nationals, making it one of the deadliest plane crashes in terms of British fatalities.

A lawyer representing 20 British families has expressed concerns that some of the remains of the victims may have been incorrectly identified. James Healy-Pratt, speaking to the Press Association, highlighted that one family discovered that the coffin they received contained "co-mingled" remains. Another family was informed that their loved one's body was not actually in the coffin at all. These developments have raised serious questions about the handling of the remains and the need for transparency in the aftermath of the tragedy.

Another sensitive topic that could be discussed during the meeting involves the case of Jagtar Singh Johal, a Scottish Sikh activist who has been imprisoned in India since 2017 on charges related to terrorism. Despite being held for seven years, Johal has not been convicted of any crime. In March, he was cleared of one of the nine charges against him. His brother, Gurpreet Singh Johal, has urged the leaders to prioritize this case during their discussions, emphasizing that it should be high on the agenda.

The UK and India have recently announced a landmark free trade agreement, which Prime Minister Starmer described as a “major win for Britain.” According to the British government, the deal is projected to add £4.8 billion ($6.5 billion) annually to the UK economy. The agreement aims to increase trade between the two countries by £25.5 billion and is expected to support wages and create jobs across both nations.

Britain and India are the sixth and fifth largest global economies, respectively, with a trade relationship valued at around £41 billion. Investment between the two countries supports over 600,000 jobs. As Modi prepared to leave India on Wednesday, he expressed optimism about the growing partnership, stating that it had achieved “significant momentum in the last few years.”

Under the new trade deal, tariffs on imports of UK goods into India, such as whisky, cosmetics, and medical devices, will be reduced. In return, the UK will lower tariffs on Indian goods including clothing, footwear, and food products like frozen prawns.

Starmer and Modi have met on several occasions in recent months, including at the G7 summit in Canada last month and the G20 meeting in Brazil last year. Their upcoming discussions are expected to cover a wide range of topics, from trade and investment to human rights and regional security.
