Missing Woman Found in Rain Barrel Died in 'Tragic Accident,' Officials Confirm

Tragic Discovery of a Woman Found in a Rain Barrel
Karin Ottenberg, a 49-year-old woman from Wilmington, North Carolina, was last seen alive and well on December 22, 2024. Her family reported that she appeared fine during their last interaction with her. However, the following day, when her child, who split time between his parents, was dropped off at her home, he couldn’t find her.
The medical examiner's report, obtained by HAWXTECH and compiled from medical records and conversations with law enforcement, stated that other family members searched for her, but eventually the child returned with his father. It wasn’t until the next day that the family decided to file a missing person’s report with the Wilmington Police Department.
Law enforcement and family members conducted searches of Ottenberg’s residence and other potential locations, but she was not found. Four days later, on December 27, police returned to her home and discovered her body inside a rain barrel located near the back deck.
According to the report, Ottenberg was fully clothed, with her head down and curled up in the barrel. The barrel was approximately 40 inches tall with an opening of about 18 inches. Her head was submerged in roughly 18 inches of water. There were no signs of foul play or suicide, and officials believe she accidentally fell into the barrel while reaching over the deck rail for something.
The yard and deck were littered with empty beer bottles, and she had been seen on video purchasing beer at a local store shortly before she disappeared. It remains unclear whether the barrel was filled with rainwater before or after she fell in.
A spokesperson for the Wilmington Police Department stated that the death was a “tragic accident.” They noted that investigators maintained regular contact with her family throughout the time she was missing, all the way through her discovery. No evidence of criminal activity was found, and the case was closed with respect for the family.
The medical examiner’s report listed the probable cause of death as accidental drowning. When contacted for further information, the police department confirmed that their investigation was complete.
A Life Lived with Passion and Purpose
In the obituary published by her loved ones, Karin Ottenberg was remembered as a “devoted mother, daughter, sister, and friend whose warmth and kindness touched all who knew her.” She worked as a waitress, art teacher, and banker before finding her true calling in horticulture. She dedicated the majority of her career to nurturing and propagating plants, flowers, bushes, and trees. Her love for nature reflected the care she showed in every aspect of her life.
Ottenberg is survived by her mother, Anita Mills Roberts, her brother, Kevin Rochelle, and her children, Isabella (Izzy) and Bodey Ottenberg. Her legacy continues to be celebrated by those who knew her, highlighting the impact she had on the lives of others.
