Milei's Inner Circle Divided Over Party Candidates

Rising Tensions Within Argentina's Ruling Party
The political landscape in Argentina is becoming increasingly complex as internal disputes within the ruling libertarian party, La Libertad Avanza, threaten to impact the country’s upcoming elections. The situation has been exacerbated by the influence of Karina Milei, the sister of President Javier Milei, who has taken a firm stance to maintain party unity.
Karina Milei, one of her brother’s most trusted confidants, recently made a public statement urging supporters to align with the party's direction. This move came after some members of the party expressed dissatisfaction with the list of local candidates for the province of Buenos Aires, which will hold an election in September. This vote is critical as it could bolster Milei’s party and support his agenda of reducing government spending and revitalizing the economy.
The conflict arose when candidates backed by Karina Milei were selected over those preferred by Santiago Caputo, another senior adviser to the president. This decision led to frustration among Caputo's supporters, who felt that the candidate list was too accommodating to figures associated with the center-left Peronist opposition.
In a post on X, Karina Milei emphasized the importance of loyalty and unity within the party. She stated, “We’re here to defend the ideas of the president tooth and nail.” Her message was clear: questioning the party's decisions is equivalent to questioning the president himself.
This internal strife is part of a broader pattern of disarray within the ruling party. Earlier this month, there was a public falling out between President Milei and his vice president over spending policies. This has raised concerns about the party's ability to present a united front.
The upcoming October elections are seen as a crucial test for Milei’s agenda. With the suspension of the usual primaries, the Sept. 7 election to renew the provincial Buenos Aires legislature has gained significant attention. The local nominees for the president’s party were finalized by Karina last weekend and include candidates from various political backgrounds.
Notably, some of these candidates have past ties to Peronist Governor Axel Kicillof, a fierce critic of Milei, and Sergio Massa, the Peronist standard-bearer who defeated Milei in the late 2023 presidential runoff.
Caputo loyalists have not held back in their criticism. A social media figure known as @TraductorTeAma highlighted the candidates with Peronist links in a series of posts. Another member of the government’s unofficial communications team, @MiltonFriedmon5, criticized the picks, calling one newly selected candidate a supporter of price controls.
Whether these internal disputes will affect how voters perceive Milei’s party remains uncertain. Lucas Romero, director of Buenos Aires-based Synopsis consultancy, noted that the situation is a symptom of internal disarray. He added that Milei’s enforcers must now work to get the party in line and quiet the criticism.
As the political climate continues to evolve, the focus remains on the upcoming elections and the potential impact of internal conflicts on the ruling party's performance. The coming months will be crucial in determining the future direction of Argentina's political landscape.
