Mila Kunis Reveals the Extreme Measures She Took for Her Role in Black Swan

Mila Kunis, known for her role as Lily in the 2010 film Black Swan, has recently opened up about the intense physical and mental challenges she faced while preparing for the part. The movie, which features Natalie Portman as a ballerina, required Kunis to embody a rival character who needed to look and move like a professional dancer.

Kunis shared that her preparation involved a strict regimen of both physical activity and dietary restrictions. "My prep was a lot of dancing and very little eating — which I know you're not supposed to say, but it's the truth," she told Vogue in a recent interview. She described spending up to 12 hours a day dancing and surviving on just 1,200 calories a day. To help maintain her weight, she drank a lot of broth and even smoked cigarettes.

"I smoked a lot of cigarettes and I ate a limited amount of calories," she said. "I got down to just 95 pounds so I would 'look skinny' enough to convincingly play a ballerina." Kunis admitted that she wasn’t a trained dancer, so she had to fake the look and movements of a professional. "Because I'm not a ballerina, I have to get on point within three months, and so to get on point, you almost have to fake it," she explained. "So, the best way to fake it is to unfortunately look like it."

While Kunis insists she lost the weight "in the healthiest way possible," she also emphasized that she wouldn’t recommend her methods to anyone. "I don't advocate this at all," she stated. "It was awful."

Physical Challenges on Set

The filming of Black Swan was not only mentally taxing but also physically demanding. Kunis described the toll that the extensive dance sequences took on her body. "We would shoot those dancing scenes for hours, and I had bruises all over my ribs just from being lifted over and over again," she recalled.

She also suffered an injury early in production when she dislocated her shoulder. "I thought I was completely screwed, but [director] Darren [Aronofsky] sent me to an acupuncturist and I somehow came out totally fine," she said.

Natalie Portman, who played the lead role, also experienced injuries on set. During a scene where Lily is pushed into a mirror, Portman suffered a serious injury. While she later claimed she "completely blacked that out" and had no memory of the incident, Kunis remembered the aftermath. "You were scarred up all around your neck," she said.
