Strong Winds Cause Significant Damage in Mount Prospect

Powerful winds caused a large section of the roof to be torn off an apartment building in northwest suburban Mount Prospect this weekend, leading to damage to several cars in the parking lot. The incident occurred on Saturday evening near Route 83 and Dempster Street, during one of multiple rounds of severe storms that swept through the area.

Fire officials later determined that a microburst was likely responsible for the destruction. A microburst is a small but intense downdraft that can produce damaging straight-line winds, often mistaken for tornadoes due to their destructive power.

Kamil Seremak shared his experience after being alerted by his girlfriend about the roof being torn off. When he arrived at the scene, water was pouring into the building’s hallways. He and his girlfriend managed to get their cats out of the building and then helped neighbors evacuate.

“The place was just getting flooded. I’m assuming some of the water pipes or something kind of came off with the roof, and the place was just kind of coming down,” Seremak said. “I guess it could have been part of the rain, you know, but I definitely think some water pipes or something definitely burst, or something, and the hallways were just kind of coming down. I mean, the water was waterfalls in every hallway coming down.”

Despite the chaos, there were no reports of injuries. However, several ambulances rushed to the scene, and storm spotters in the area reported wind gusts of up to 60 mph at the time.

Marcin Belizzynski, a resident of the area, described the damage to his Nissan Rogue. The roof and frame of his vehicle were severely damaged. He had been coming home from work just before 4:30 p.m. when the storm hit. He debated whether to stay in his car or go inside, eventually deciding to head into his apartment.

“If I would have stayed in this car five more minutes, who knows if I would be here?” Belizzynski said. “Look at my car. Look at the scars.”

Impact on Residents and Evacuation Efforts

The following day, tensions were high as residents were not allowed back into the building for safety reasons. Some needed medication, but they couldn’t access their homes. Mount Prospect fire Deputy Chief Tom Wang explained that 300 residents live in the four-story apartment building, with about 60 units impacted.

“Our firefighters arrived on scene. They went straight to the fourth floor to make sure there was no fire, and then immediately worked on evacuating the residents of the fourth floor and the entire building,” Wang said.

CBS News Chicago spoke to a resident who lives on the fourth floor. She did not want to reveal her identity but described the moment the storm struck. “Suddenly, I'm looking at the sky and rain is coming on me,” she said. “I didn't know what to do. I didn't know what to think. I think for a moment I was somewhere else.”

Another resident, Robert Harms, expressed his shock at the sudden devastation. “I've been living here for 25 years. I've never seen anything that's been this devastating this quickly,” he said. “Life can change in a heartbeat, and this is an example there.”

Relief Efforts and Next Steps

The American Red Cross set up a shelter at Mount Prospect Park District recreation center for affected residents. The organization provided meals, replaced medications, and offered emotional support to those displaced.

“We'll be feeding them three meals a day,” said American Red Cross spokesman Hank Welch. “We've had to replace four or five different medications, because they can't go back in to get their meds — and providing a whole bunch of hugs, comfort and care.”

Nine residents stayed at the shelter overnight, but the Red Cross is seeking a new location since school programs begin on Monday. Meanwhile, fire officials are working to assess the structural integrity of the building, with building managers expected to conduct inspections in the coming days.
