Ojinaga and Juarez: A Growing Concern for U.S. Citizens

In the border cities of Ojinaga and Juarez, tensions have escalated as local authorities in the Mexican state of Chihuahua report they are following solid leads in the recent murders of U.S. citizens. One of the victims was 20-year-old Alan Valenzuela from Presidio, Texas. According to the Presidio County Sheriff’s Office, Alan and his friends were at a venue in Ojinaga when he was struck by random gunfire. The incident has left many questions unanswered about how and why it occurred.

Cartel Conflicts and Rising Violence

The violence in the region is linked to ongoing conflicts between drug cartels. In particular, the Sinaloa cartel and its rival La Linea have been engaged in a bitter struggle for control over drug and migrant smuggling routes. Over the past five years, this feud has led to significant unrest, including the disappearance and presumed death of 13 migrants in the fall of 2021. Their remains were later found in a mass grave in 2023.

On Monday, Chihuahua Public Safety Director Gilberto Loya mentioned that several members of a criminal cell arrested on Sunday for drug and weapons charges are under investigation in connection with the July 6 shooting that claimed the life of an American citizen. The arrests of Los Cabrera gang members, including one of their leaders, prompted increased patrols in Ojinaga and around the Chihuahua City prison where they are being held.

Kidnapping and Murder Cases

Another tragic incident involved the discovery of a young woman's remains in Juarez on July 22. The body was found buried two feet underground in a home on Moncayo street in the Urbi Villa del Cedro neighborhood. The case stems from a kidnapping investigation, according to the Chihuahua Attorney General’s Office. The victim was between 15 and 20 years old, with a robust build, tattoos, and a belly ring.

State investigators believe the victim was a 17-year-old from New Mexico who had traveled to Juarez to visit a friend. She was kidnapped by a criminal gang, and her family received ransom demands via a social media app three days after she left her home in New Mexico. The kidnappers sent photos and videos to prove they had the girl. It is unclear what happened afterward, but the Attorney General’s Office stated that the girl was strangled and then buried.

Escalating Crime Trends

Loya noted that organized criminals in Juarez have targeted migrants for kidnapping during surges in recent years. However, since traffic decreased after President Trump took office, gangs have shifted their focus to targeting people in Juarez. In May and June, this crime pattern changed, with non-migrants becoming targets. Despite this, most cases resulted in arrests, which significantly reduced the number of kidnappings before the American girl’s case.

Ongoing Investigations and Community Impact

The case involving the young woman from New Mexico is still open and under investigation. Loya emphasized that while there is important information available, he does not want to release details prematurely as the investigation continues. Authorities are working closely with the Attorney General’s Office to ensure justice is served.

Local law enforcement has also made arrests in multiple kidnapping cases involving migrants and Juarez residents. Border Report reached out to the Lea County Sheriff’s Office for more information but was referred to the Hobbs Police Department. The outlet left a message and is awaiting a response.

As these incidents continue to unfold, the impact on the community is evident. Families are grieving, and the sense of safety in border towns is being challenged. Local authorities remain vigilant, increasing patrols and working to bring those responsible to justice.
