German Chancellor Friedrich Merz met with French President Emmanuel Macron in Berlin on Wednesday, marking a significant step in strengthening bilateral ties as both nations navigate complex global political and economic landscapes. This visit represents Macron’s first trip to Germany since Merz took office in early May, highlighting the importance of maintaining a strong partnership between the two European powers.

The meeting took place at the lakeside Villa Borsig outside Berlin, where Merz hosted Macron for an evening dinner. The leaders emphasized their commitment to deepening cooperation across all levels, underscoring the long-standing friendship that has developed over decades. Merz expressed a sense of responsibility to continue building on this foundation, while Macron highlighted the personal rapport between himself and Merz, as well as the broader relationship between France and Germany.

With U.S. President Donald Trump threatening to impose 30% tariffs on EU goods if no trade deal is reached by August, both leaders acknowledged the urgency of addressing this matter. Merz suggested that decisions could be made soon, stating that they would discuss current trade policy and the possibility of resolving the dispute.

Macron emphasized the need for a unified European response to the tariff threat, stressing the importance of stability and minimizing the impact on trade. He indicated that coordination with other European counterparts would be essential in developing a strategic approach to this challenge.

Joint Defense Projects and Disagreements

Another key topic of discussion was the joint next-generation fighter project, known as the Future Combat Air System (FCAS). This ambitious initiative involves France, Germany, and Spain and aims to replace existing aircraft such as the Rafale, Eurofighter, and Typhoon by 2040. However, the project has faced delays and internal disagreements over workshare and intellectual property rights.

Eric Trappier, head of Dassault, recently raised concerns about the project's viability. In response, Merz and Macron agreed to resolve the differences by the end of August, according to a German government spokesperson. Other Points of Disagreement

Beyond the FCAS project, there are several other areas of contention between France and Germany. One such issue is the proposal for joint European debt to boost the bloc’s defense industry, which Berlin has consistently opposed. Additionally, the countries differ on energy policies: France relies heavily on nuclear energy, while Germany has completely phased it out.

France has also pushed for Germany to adopt a stance of "technology neutrality" and recognize nuclear energy as climate-friendly. While the previous German government rejected this idea, Merz's administration may be more open to considering it.

Another point of disagreement involves the trade agreement between the EU and the Latin American Mercosur group. Both nations have different perspectives on how to approach this potential deal, reflecting broader differences in their economic strategies.
