Expert Endorses Honda as the World’s Most Reliable Car Brand

A seasoned motor engineer and author has shared his insights on the automotive industry, emphasizing the importance of reliability when purchasing used vehicles. James Goodhand, known for his expertise in the field, recently discussed with Reach PLC his recommendations for buyers seeking quality cars. When asked about the most reliable car brand, he highlighted Honda, a Japanese manufacturer renowned for its engineering excellence.

Goodhand explained that if budget allows, he strongly advises buyers to consider Japanese cars, with Honda standing out as the top choice. He remarked, "If everyone drove a Honda, I would go out of business." His confidence in Honda stems from its outstanding reliability. For instance, he manages a 20-year-old Honda Civic with over 200,000 miles on the clock, which continues to perform exceptionally well.

He described the smooth operation of the vehicle, noting that "the engine ticks over so smoothly you could stand your cup of tea on it, and it's so quiet you're hard pushed to tell if it's running. And this thing has covered enough miles to reach the moon."

Personal Preference: Volvo and BMW

While Goodhand praises Honda for its reliability, his personal choice of vehicle comes from a different manufacturer. He owns a Volvo V90, which he considers a trusted companion. In addition to the Volvo, he also has a BMW M3 that he has owned for 15 years. This car has served as a family vehicle at various points and was even the one that transported his son home from the maternity ward.

This blend of Swedish and German engineering reflects his appreciation for both comfort and performance in his personal transportation.

Honda’s Reputation and Future in the UK

James is not alone in recognizing Honda’s strengths. Automotive review platform WhatCar? has evaluated several compact cars, with the Honda Jazz ranking among the top three for its practicality and dependability. The experts noted that while the Jazz has gained recognition for its spacious cabin and strong reliability, it hasn't yet matched the sales success of some of its competitors.

Despite this, there is growing interest in Honda’s role in the UK’s automotive future. The company had operated a manufacturing facility in Swindon for nearly four decades. However, the South Marston plant, which had been producing Hondas since 1985, closed in 2021.

The former site is now being transformed into Panattoni Park, a massive commercial development valued at $1.21 billion. Construction began last year, and local authorities have welcomed the project. Jim Robbins, leader of Swindon Borough Council, stated, "I'm really pleased we are finally seeing development come forward on the old Honda site as it will future proof the Swindon economy, bringing thousands of new jobs and significant investment in biodiversity, local roads and public access."

This shift marks a new chapter for the area, signaling a commitment to growth and economic development. As the automotive landscape continues to evolve, Honda's legacy remains a benchmark for reliability and innovation.
