The Uncertain Fate of Marvel Characters

When it comes to any TV show or movie, the future is always uncertain. A project could be well-loved, generate significant revenue, and stream successfully, yet still face cancellation. On the flip side, unexpected events can also disrupt plans, especially in the world of comic book adaptations. For instance, fans have been eagerly awaiting news about Mahershala Ali’s Blade for years, to the point where he has even stopped discussing the project.

Marvel’s recent announcement of the stars set to appear in Avengers: Doomsday sparked both excitement and concern. Fans were thrilled with the names revealed during a five-hour livestream, but they also questioned where some characters might fit. Notably absent were Oscar Isaac’s Moon Knight and the heroes from Eternals. These characters were major additions to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Phase Four, headlining their own projects, but there has been little information about their potential return.

Kevin Feige Speaks on Future Appearances

According to Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige, some of these beloved characters could return sooner than expected. During an interview with journalists, Feige addressed whether fans could see characters like Moon Knight or the Eternals again in the future. He hinted at the possibility of these characters making appearances in upcoming movies and beyond, emphasizing the fun of the comics where anyone can pop up anywhere.

Feige's comments align with what comic book fans have known for years. Characters you love and hate can appear unexpectedly, and when done right, it becomes a delightful surprise. An example of this is the Illuminati's debut in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which showcased how a character like Black Bolt could add depth to the story.

Teasing the Future of the MCU

During the conversation, Feige was careful not to reveal too much, as saying the wrong thing could lead to unintended consequences. However, with the upcoming releases of Avengers: Doomsday, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, and Avengers: Secret Wars, there are likely to be many returning characters that fans haven’t seen in a while. Could Marc Spector (Moon Knight) or the Eternals be among them? What about She-Hulk?

The Potential Return of Key Characters

Before concluding, it’s important to note that the writer is a fan of Eternals in the MCU. While the film had its flaws and could have been better suited for a Disney Plus series, the characters themselves hold value. However, it remains unclear where they fit in Marvel Studios’ current plans. If anything, their return could serve to highlight the power of other characters. Beyond that, the writer doesn’t see a clear reason for their return in this phase.

As for Moon Knight, he is often compared to garlic powder—useful in various situations. He is an entertaining and complex character with the superpowers to be an Avenger or a fighter used to showcase someone’s skills. Plus, everyone loves Oscar Isaac. The mere possibility of his return is a big deal. Hopefully, this leads to Moon Knight season 2. Although Marvel's Head of Television, Streaming and Animation, Brad Winderbaum, has suggested other plans for Moon Knight, it’s reassuring to know he will return in some capacity.

Looking Ahead

While it's tempting to get ahead of ourselves, it's important to remember that Avengers: Secret Wars is still years away, and the MCU could undergo a reboot and recast after that. Nevertheless, the writer looks forward to seeing any of Marc Spector’s personalities or the Eternals in a future project. Stay tuned for updates on whether and when that might happen.
