Marco Rubio Confronts ABC Over Trump's Putin 'Red Carpet' Question

Marco Rubio Defends Trump's Diplomatic Approach with Putin
During a recent interview on ABC’s “This Week,” Secretary of State Marco Rubio responded to questions about President Donald Trump’s warm reception of Russian President Vladimir Putin during their recent summit in Anchorage, Alaska. The conversation centered on the symbolic gesture of the red carpet used for their meeting, which has drawn criticism from some media outlets and political commentators.
Rubio dismissed concerns about the significance of the red carpet, emphasizing that direct engagement with Russia is essential for any meaningful progress in ending the conflict in Ukraine. He argued that the focus on the ceremonial aspects of the meeting detracts from the broader goal of achieving peace through dialogue.
“Critics of President Trump will say that the pomp and circumstances… the red carpet, the warm handshake, that President Trump lost that [and] that Putin gained there just by being on the world stage and walking down a red carpet with the president. Your reaction to that?” asked Martha Raddatz, the ABC News host.
In response, Rubio stated, “Critics of President Trump are always gonna find something to criticize, I don’t even pay attention to it anymore. When I hear people say that, ‘oh, it elevates him.’ Well, all we do is talk about Putin all the time! All the media’s done is talk about Putin all the time for last four, five years.”
He continued, “That doesn’t mean he’s right about the war. That doesn’t mean he’s justified about the war. Put all that aside. It means you’re not going to have a peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine, you’re not going to end a war between Russia and Ukraine without dealing with Putin. That’s just common sense, I shouldn’t even have to say it.”
The Symbolism of the Red Carpet
The meeting between Trump and Putin took place on an L-shaped red carpet, where the two leaders shook hands before entering a vehicle to begin their three-hour discussion. They later held a joint press conference, addressing potential steps toward resolving the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
Despite the diplomatic setting, several media outlets, including CNN and ABC News, criticized the use of the red carpet as sending the wrong message to Ukraine. CNN host Abby Phillip suggested that the gesture could be interpreted as endorsing Putin’s actions, while ABC News’ David Muir claimed that Trump’s approach gave Putin a standing ovation through the symbolic welcome.
“It’s hard to believe that this is not what Vladimir Putin at least would want at this moment to be welcomed on American soil,” Muir said.
Raddatz agreed, stating, “Exactly, David. And with that red carpet rolled out.”
Optimism for Peace Talks
Although no official agreement has been reached, Trump expressed optimism that a deal could be made in the near future. According to reports, Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy are expected to meet to discuss possible peace negotiations. This development was mentioned by Trump during an appearance on Fox News with Sean Hannity.
Trump is set to meet with Zelenskyy and other European leaders at the White House on Monday to further discuss the situation. His administration has been actively working to facilitate dialogue between the conflicting parties, despite the challenges posed by Russia’s position.
A History of Diplomatic Efforts
In May, Trump announced the start of peace negotiations following a two-hour call with Putin. However, the Russian leader initially showed reluctance to engage directly with Ukraine. In July, Trump threatened to impose “severe” tariffs and sanctions on Russia if it did not come to the table within 50 days, though he later reduced the deadline to 10 days.
Throughout his 2024 campaign, Trump has consistently advocated for a peaceful resolution to the conflict, arguing that the situation would not have escalated under his leadership. He has also criticized the previous administration for its handling of the crisis, suggesting that a different approach could have led to a more favorable outcome.
The Road Ahead
As the situation continues to evolve, the focus remains on whether diplomatic efforts can lead to a lasting peace. While the symbolism of the red carpet has sparked debate, the underlying goal of engaging with Russia to achieve stability in Ukraine remains a priority for the current administration. Whether these efforts will succeed remains to be seen, but the commitment to dialogue persists.
