Las Vegas Man Linked to Manhattan Shooting Under Investigation

Las Vegas police are assisting in the investigation of a local man who has been identified by New York authorities as the shooter in a tragic Manhattan incident that resulted in the deaths of four individuals, including a police officer. The individual in question is Shane Tamura, a resident of Las Vegas, and his connection to the shooting has prompted a multi-agency response.

The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD) confirmed that its Counterterrorism Section is working alongside the New York Police Department (NYPD) to uncover the details surrounding the case. According to sources, NYPD officials have traveled to Las Vegas to conduct interviews and gather information about Tamura. Early reports suggest that his motive might be linked to football-related injuries, though no official statement has been released on this matter.

Tamura was employed at the Horseshoe Las Vegas as part of the surveillance department. The casino has stated that it is cooperating fully with law enforcement during the ongoing investigation. LVMPD issued a social media statement expressing their support for the NYPD and expressing deep sorrow over the loss of life. They also extended their condolences to the families and friends of the victims, including Officer Didarul Islam.

Law enforcement officers were seen surrounding Tamura’s home near Rampart and West Lake Mead boulevards on Monday night. Sources indicate that the location belongs to his parents. On Tuesday, another apartment associated with Tamura was being investigated by Las Vegas Metro Police.

Tamura had an active concealed carry permit and no known criminal history. However, court records show that he was charged with trespassing in 2023. The incident occurred when Tamura was gambling at the Red Rock Casino Resort and Spa. He refused to show his identification when asked, leading to a confrontation with security personnel. An officer reported that Tamura became agitated and attempted to grab a security officer before being detained. Although he eventually provided his ID, he refused to leave the property, resulting in his arrest.

The trespassing charge was later dropped, according to court records. Additionally, Tamura was reportedly placed on a psychiatric hold in both 2022 and 2024. A law enforcement official mentioned that an LVMPD officer believed Tamura posed a threat to himself or others after encountering him on the street. He was taken to a hospital for evaluation and placed on a psychiatric hold for an unspecified duration.

Neighbors in the area described Tamura as someone they did not personally know but recognized his car, which was often seen driving in and out of the gated community. One neighbor expressed shock at the situation, stating that it was supposed to be a safe neighborhood.

According to reports, Tamura attempted to access the National Football League offices but took the wrong elevator. This information came from New York City Mayor Eric Adams, who also noted that Tamura had a history of mental illness. Police discovered a “rambling note” in Tamura’s pocket, in which he claimed to suffer from chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), a degenerative brain disease associated with repeated head trauma.

Investigators believe that Tamura drove across the country to New York before entering a Park Avenue building, opening fire, and ultimately taking his own life on the 33rd floor. His brain will be examined for signs of CTE by the New York City Office of Chief Medical Examiner. A spokesperson for the medical examiner confirmed that an in-house neuropathology expert will conduct the autopsy.

A note found in Tamura’s pocket reportedly expressed grievances toward the NFL and detailed his struggles with CTE. Sources indicated that Tamura had been a competitive football player in his youth, which may have contributed to his condition. The full extent of his mental health challenges and the circumstances leading up to the shooting remain under investigation.
