Key Races in Manassas for the 2025 General Election

Manassas, Virginia, is preparing for its 2025 general election on November 4, with voters set to choose candidates for several local and state positions. This year’s elections will feature two key city offices: commissioner of the revenue and treasurer, as well as a House of Delegates race. Early voting will begin on September 19, giving residents ample time to cast their ballots.

The commissioner of the revenue is responsible for administering taxes set by local and state law. Incumbent Democrat Tim Demeria is seeking re-election, having held the position since January 2022. Demeria has worked to refine the budget process with the city council and city manager, while also expanding the number of deputies who have achieved master deputy certificates. His experience and accomplishments have made him a strong contender in the race.

His Republican opponent, Deon Shamberger, brings a different perspective to the table. With experience in tax assessments, including managing car tax assessments, Shamberger has also worked in business-to-business sales and customer service. As a small business owner and licensed insurance agent, he aims to bring his expertise to the role of commissioner of the revenue.

The treasurer oversees the city's finances and is responsible for collecting payments of taxes, fees, and utility bills. Incumbent Democrat Patricia Richie-Folks has served in this role since 2016 and has been re-elected twice. According to the Democratic Party, her achievements include improving financial efficiency, maintaining a 98 percent tax collection rate, and ensuring transparency in taxpayer services.

Republican challenger Nate Fritzen, an Osbourn High School graduate and longtime Manassas resident, currently works in a food service supervisory position. His experience in tracking inventory, balancing daily sales, and maintaining operations has prepared him for the responsibilities of the treasurer role.

Statewide Races and the House of Delegates

In addition to the local races, voters will also cast ballots in statewide elections for Virginia governor, lieutenant governor, and attorney general. The current Republican governor, Glenn Youngkin, is not running for re-election, as Virginia governors are limited to serving one term.

House of Delegates District 20, which includes Manassas, Manassas Park, and part of Prince William County, will see a competitive race between incumbent Del. Michelle Lopes Maldonado (D-Manassas) and Republican Christopher Stone. Maldonado, a first-time woman and person of color to serve in the district, has built a reputation as a hardworking and collaborative legislator. She founded the bipartisan Virginia Technology and Innovation Caucus and serves on multiple committees.

Stone, a retired Air Force veteran, brings a wealth of experience from senior advisory roles at the Pentagon, National Guard Bureau, and Air Force. He has also worked as a presidential appointee, U.S. senator staffer, former professor, and vice president in the private sector. His background in defense and economic policy positions him as a strong candidate for the role.

Gubernatorial, Lieutenant Governor, and Attorney General Races

Voters will also decide on the next governor of Virginia, with Democrat Abigail Spanberger and Republican Lt. Governor Winsome Earle-Sears as the top contenders. For lieutenant governor, Democratic state Sen. Ghazala Hashmi faces off against Republican Jon Reid. In the attorney general race, Democratic former Del. Jay Jones challenges incumbent Republican Jason Miyares.
