A Tragic Crime in Wisconsin

A 25-year-old man from Wisconsin may face the rest of his life in prison after fatally shooting his 74-year-old grandmother. The incident occurred when the elderly woman discovered a gun in his room and was about to call the police. Sean C. Couture, the accused, made the decision to end her life to prevent her from reporting the firearm.

In August 2024, Waukesha County Circuit Judge J. Arthur Melvin III sentenced Couture to 26 years to life in a state correctional facility for the murder of Nancy Lovejoy. Court records show that Couture reached a plea deal with prosecutors, pleading guilty to one count of first-degree intentional homicide with a domestic abuse modifier. In exchange, other charges, including failing to comply with an officer and operating a firearm while intoxicated, were dismissed. The judge also credited Couture with 388 days of time already served.

According to a probable cause affidavit, officers from the Waukesha Police Department responded to a call about shots being fired on August 25, 2024, at around 8:32 p.m. The 911 call came from Couture's parents, who were out of the state on vacation. They had received a call from their son, who said, "It's over, it's over," and claimed he had just shot his grandmother and was planning to shoot himself as well.

When authorities arrived, Couture locked himself inside the home. Using a drone, police spotted what appeared to be the body of an adult female lying motionless on the stairs leading to the basement. A rescue team waited for Couture to enter a bedroom before entering the home and removing the victim, later identified as Lovejoy. She was taken to a local hospital, where she was pronounced dead due to multiple gunshot wounds.

With the help of a K-9 unit, police entered the home and detained Couture, who had a blood alcohol content of 0.45, more than five times the legal limit for driving. Inside the house, they found a handgun, multiple magazines, and a receipt showing Couture had purchased the firearm on June 4, 2024.

At the hospital, Couture spoke with police and asked about his grandmother, repeatedly referencing her being shot even though officers had only told him she had been injured and died. He then admitted to shooting his grandmother, according to police.

The affidavit stated that Couture admitted to arguing with his grandmother the night of the shooting after she discovered the firearm in his room. He believed she would call the police about the gun and shot her as she was just outside the side door to the residence. He then dragged her body inside the house onto the basement stairs where she was found because he didn’t want to leave her body outside.

Couture also admitted to drinking alcohol before and after the shooting.

This tragic case highlights the devastating consequences of domestic violence and the dangers of unsecured firearms. It serves as a reminder of the importance of responsible gun ownership and the need for support systems to help individuals in crisis.
