Man Killed, One Injured in Shooting Near Yale University

Tragedy Strikes New Haven as Young Man Killed in Shooting Before Yale Move-In
A tragic shooting occurred in New Haven, Connecticut, just hours before the start of freshman move-in day at Yale University. The incident has left the local community and university students shocked and concerned about safety in the area.
The victim was identified as 18-year-old Dillon Cornelius from West Haven. Authorities confirmed that no individuals affiliated with Yale University were involved in the shooting. The incident took place around 2:52 a.m. on Sunday near College Street, close to Crown and Chapel streets. Officers responding to a bar detail heard gunshots and quickly arrived at the scene.
Cornelius was found unresponsive and suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was taken to the hospital but later died due to the severity of his injuries. Approximately 20 minutes after the incident, a 23-year-old man from Hamden arrived at the same hospital with a leg injury. Authorities believe he was a bystander and not seriously harmed.
Police indicated that the shooting involved two groups known to local law enforcement. Multiple individuals reportedly fired at each other during the incident. Assistant Chief David Zannelli of the New Haven Police Department stated that the event appeared to be targeted, though the investigation is still ongoing.
Over 30 shell casings were recovered from the scene, and nearby businesses, including a Yale building, sustained damage. Despite the incident, officials assured the public that Yale students should not be concerned. However, they urged parents of teenagers to keep their children away from the streets, especially late at night.
Chief Karl Jacobson emphasized that the bar area is designated for those 21 and older. He expressed concern over younger individuals being present, noting that while officers are occupied with intoxicated patrons, conflicts can arise on the outskirts of the area.
Newly admitted Yale students shared their reactions to the tragedy. Cameron Nelson, a freshman, said he was not typically afraid but found the situation shocking. Eunice Mensah, a public health master’s student, received an alert from the university and acknowledged the downtown violence as a concern. She advised people to avoid the area late at night if they want to stay safe.
Ryan Leach, a student from New York, expressed his worry about the incident happening so close to Yale. “It’s awful that something like that can happen, especially with Yale right here,” he said.
Yale University issued a statement addressing the shooting. The university shared information about the off-campus incident through a timely warning, confirming that no members of the Yale community were involved. They extended their deepest condolences to the family of the deceased and wished a quick recovery for the injured individual.
Move-in activities for new and returning students will proceed as scheduled. Yale police, in collaboration with New Haven police, continue to prioritize the safety of both the university and city communities. Recent efforts include joint patrols, increased use of safety cameras, and community partnerships aimed at preventing violence.
Violent crime in New Haven has seen a significant decline this year compared to previous years. These improvements reflect ongoing efforts between law enforcement and the community to maintain a safe environment.
Just last week, reports indicated that gun violence in the Elm City had reached a ten-year low. However, this incident marks the second late-night shooting in the downtown area within three weeks.
Investigators are continuing their work, aided by surveillance cameras, license plate readers, and community assistance. Zannelli mentioned plans for increased police presence, including motor units and uniformed officers, as well as personal involvement from senior officials.
As of early Monday morning, no arrests have been made. The New Haven Police Department encourages anyone with information to contact them at 203-946-6304. Further updates will be provided as more details become available.
