Madison Man Faces Murder Charges in 16-Year-Old's Death

A 22-Year-Old Man Charged in the Fatal Shooting of a 16-Year-Old in Madison
A 22-year-old man from Madison has been charged in connection with the fatal shooting of a 16-year-old youth that occurred on July 26. Rayontae M. Pearson faces multiple serious charges, including two counts of first-degree murder, which are classified as Class M felonies. He is also accused of unlawful use of weapons for possessing a machine gun, a Class 2 felony, and being a felon in possession of a weapon, a Class 3 felony.
The case was brought forward after the Major Case Squad of Greater St. Louis was activated, following an investigation by the Madison Police Department. According to court documents, Pearson shot and killed the unidentified 16-year-old victim on the day of the incident. The suspect was also charged with possessing a .40 caliber handgun that had been converted to fire as a fully automatic weapon. Pearson was subsequently remanded to jail.
Surveillance Video Captures the Tragic Incident
Police statements and a petition to deny pre-trial release, filed by the Madison County State’s Attorney’s Office, describe the events leading up to the shooting. On July 26, at approximately 1:15 p.m., Madison police responded to a report of gunfire and found the victim lying in the intersection of Washington and Wayne Lanter avenues with a gunshot wound to the back of the head.
Surveillance footage captured images of someone later identified as Pearson chasing the victim and firing at him. Additional video tracked the suspect’s movements before and after the shooting. The victim's cell phone was found in his hand, and it was determined that he had called Pearson about two minutes before the incident and left a voicemail. The voicemail reportedly contained the victim screaming for help while running away as Pearson chased and shot at him. Other communications between the two individuals were also recovered during the investigation.
Evidence Links Pearson to the Crime
Investigators found clothing linked to Pearson during searches of his girlfriend’s and mother’s homes. Two firearms, including a .40 caliber handgun that was confirmed as the murder weapon, were recovered. A thumbprint belonging to Pearson was found on the firearm. These pieces of evidence played a critical role in building the case against him.
The Madison Police Department requested the activation of the Major Case Squad, which led to a collaborative effort involving 12 detectives under the command of Sgt. Brent Rombach from the Wood River Police Department.
State’s Attorney Tom Haine praised the efforts of law enforcement agencies involved in the investigation. “I want to commend Chief Jeff Bridick and the dedicated officers of the Madison Police Department for their quick response and outstanding collaboration with the Major Case Squad in this investigation,” Haine said in a written statement. “I also commend Wood River Police Sgt. Brent Rombach, who is serving as the Major Case Squad Deputy Commander for this investigation, along with the investigators who are working under his direction. The professionalism and urgency of the officers and the investigators resulted in these charges.”
Previous Legal Involvement
Pearson had previously been involved in legal matters. In September 2024, he pleaded guilty to a Class 4 weapons charge and received a sentence of two years' probation, which ran concurrently with a separate St. Clair County charge. On May 16, Pearson was charged with possession of a stolen firearm and aggravated unlawful possession of weapons. He was released from custody on that date, although a motion to revoke his probation was filed. A hearing had taken place, but he was ultimately released.
It is important to note that Pearson has only been charged and remains innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. All charges may not have been fully reported at this time.
