Louisiana Sues Roblox Over Child Safety Failures

Louisiana Sues Roblox Over Alleged Failure to Protect Children
Louisiana has taken legal action against the online gaming platform Roblox, accusing the company of creating an environment where sexual predators can "thrive, unite, hunt and victimize kids." The lawsuit was filed in state court by Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill, who claims that Roblox has not implemented adequate safety measures to protect its young users from adult predators.
Murrill emphasized that the lack of safety protocols on Roblox puts children in danger. She stated that the platform is overrun with harmful content and child predators because it prioritizes user growth, revenue, and profits over child safety. This accusation comes amid growing concerns about the risks associated with the platform, which has faced multiple lawsuits and public backlash for not doing enough to safeguard its users.
In a recent case in Iowa, a 13-year-old girl was allegedly introduced to an adult predator on Roblox, leading to her kidnapping and trafficking across multiple states. The incident has sparked further scrutiny of the platform’s safety practices. Similarly, in Louisiana, Livingston Parish Sheriff Jason Ard reported that his office has handled several cases involving Roblox. One such case involved a man using voice-altering technology to pose as a girl on the platform. Despite these allegations, no arrests have been made related to the gaming site so far.
Murrill has called for Roblox to be shut down, arguing that the company’s current measures are insufficient to protect children. However, Roblox has denied these claims, stating that the assertion that it would intentionally put users at risk is "categorically untrue."
The company highlighted that it has implemented rigorous safeguards, including restrictions on sharing personal information, links, and user-to-user image sharing. These measures aim to help protect the community, according to Roblox. The company also noted that bad actors may attempt to circumvent these systems to direct users off the platform, where safety standards and moderation practices may vary. Roblox continues to work on blocking such efforts and enhancing its moderation approaches to ensure a safe and enjoyable environment for all users.
With over 111 million monthly users, Roblox is described as "the ultimate virtual universe" that allows users to create, share experiences with friends, and explore their imagination. Despite its popularity, the platform has faced criticism for its ability to allow users to bypass safety measures. For instance, while Roblox does not allow users to share videos or images in chats and tries to block personal information like phone numbers, users often find ways around these safeguards.
Roblox maintains a zero-tolerance policy for the exploitation of minors, but it does not require users under 13 to obtain explicit parental permission to chat outside of games unless they have parental consent. Additionally, the platform does not encrypt private chat conversations, allowing the company to monitor and moderate them. However, Murrill pointed out that there is no age minimum or substantial age verification process once a user signs up, which could allow young children, teens, and adults posing as children to access the platform.
Age verification is a new feature currently being tested on Roblox. Last month, the company launched a feature requiring teenagers aged 13 to 17 to submit a video selfie to verify their ages if they want to chat freely with people they know, referred to as "trusted connections." In response to mounting criticism, Roblox has implemented additional measures aimed at keeping young users safe.
In August, Roblox announced the rollout of an artificial intelligence system designed to detect early signs of possible child endangerment, such as sexually exploitative language. According to the company, this system led to the submission of 1,200 reports of potential attempts at child exploitation to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children in the first half of 2025. These developments reflect ongoing efforts to address concerns about the safety of children on the platform.
