Lost Dog Rusty Travels 1,000 Miles to Return Home

A Journey of Survival and Reunion
A remarkable story of survival and reunion has unfolded after a dog named Rusty, an Australian Shepherd, was found 1,000 miles away from his family, terrified and covered in ticks on a highway. Rusty’s journey back home is a testament to the resilience of animals and the dedication of those who helped him along the way.
Rusty was originally owned by a woman who lived in Cheyenne, Colorado, before she was incarcerated. During her time in prison, Rusty was left under the care of her friend. However, that friend disappeared, leaving Rusty alone and vulnerable. The mystery of how Rusty managed to walk 270 miles from Cheyenne to Shoshoni, Wyoming, remains unsolved, but when he was finally found, he appeared very scared and disoriented.
The first signs of Rusty’s presence came in May when a friend of Hannah MacGregor, director of Lander Pet Connection, spotted the dog in the middle of nowhere. People had set out bowls of food and water for him, and the situation was reported on Facebook. MacGregor noted that someone had posted about the dog, but they couldn’t get close to him and were trying to figure out where he belonged.
After several hours of effort, a friend managed to rescue Rusty with the help of another family. He was taken to the shelter, where workers discovered a microchip on the dog. The chip contained two phone numbers and an emergency number, but the first two lines were disconnected. Fortunately, the emergency number worked, allowing the shelter to contact the mother of Rusty’s owner in Oklahoma.
With the owner still in prison, the shelter had to wait to speak with her. They neutered Rusty at the request of his owner's mother. After discussions with the owner's mother and son, it became clear that the family could not pick up Rusty. As a result, the dog was placed with a foster family in Afton, Wyoming, who agreed to take him in temporarily.
At the time, it was hoped that the owner would soon be released from jail. However, this did not happen, and the owner’s incarceration was expected to continue until January. Rusty began bonding with the foster family, so he remained with them until the owner's other son got involved and offered to take the dog.
Addison Miller, the wife of Allen and mother of Aiden, shared that her husband and son will host Allen’s mom when she completes her treatment for addiction issues. They were happy to add Rusty to their family, which already includes two dogs and a puppy, with whom Rusty quickly became friends.
Addison has experience in dog training and described Rusty as a purebred Australian Shepherd with both parents being papered. She called him the most beautiful brown boy ever, noting his sweetness and intelligence. To collect Rusty, the family drove 1,021 miles from their home in Sapulpa, Oklahoma, to Rock Springs.
Rusty’s story took a dramatic turn when he once saved his owner’s life. Just over a year ago, the owner passed out in bed from an overdose in a locked room. Rusty somehow knew something was wrong and went to check on her. He tried to chew through the door but couldn’t get through, so he went to the roommate’s door and jumped on it until the roommate opened it.
The roommate was initially upset because the door was damaged, but when she entered the room, she found the owner unconscious. Rusty’s actions led to her being saved. The owner is now in recovery from her addiction issues, and when she gets out of jail, she will stay with the family, continue her sobriety journey, and be reunited with her "baby."
Miller shared that her husband’s mom calls every day, and when Rusty hears her voice, he becomes excited, wagging his little nub tail. This heartwarming reunion highlights the deep bond between Rusty and his family, as well as the kindness of those who helped him along the way.
