Life Coaching as Your Personal Guidepost

A Journey of Transformation and Resilience
In times of uncertainty, developing essential skills can make a significant difference for those navigating the ever-changing landscape of life. For many, the path to success is not always straightforward, and sometimes it takes unexpected turns to uncover one's true calling.
At the age of 36, I found myself as the founder and CEO of a life coaching company, a role that was never part of my original life plan. I had no formal business education or experience in entrepreneurship. When I started my company, I was unfamiliar with concepts like marketing funnels or key performance indicators (KPIs). However, I did have a life coaching credential, years of personal challenges, and a printout on my fridge from a 2006 article predicting that life coaching and wellness would soon become major industries.
My fascination with the science behind coaching began in my twenties when I was grappling with the breakdown of my first marriage. I struggled with disordered eating and a poor self-image rooted in my teenage years. I had dropped out of law school and was working a low-level job, often wondering if there was more to life than what I was experiencing.
A Turning Point
One rainy Sunday, a documentary called What the Bleep Do We Know? changed everything. This 2004 film explored the connection between quantum physics and consciousness, even though it leaned more towards mysticism than science. For me, it sparked a personal and professional revolution based on the idea that we can create our own reality. Although I didn’t yet understand the real science behind this concept, I knew I wanted to change my life.
I delved into the work of Martin Seligman on learned helplessness, which examines how people exposed to long-term stress may feel powerless. This led me to explore human motivation and the science of change. I discovered that change requires vision, grit, resources, and support, among other factors.
After years of self-doubt and countless readings, I graduated from an ICF-accredited coaching program. I then dedicated myself to spreading the word about the transformative power of coaching.
Growth and Expansion
My journey took a dramatic turn when I was accepted into a triple degree program: MSW, MEd, and PhD. My interest in community support for personal change led me to meet my future business partner, John Kim. Together, we built virtual communities and eventually founded our company.
By the time I turned 35, I had to choose between my PhD and becoming a CEO. I overcame my eating disorders, escaped an unhappy life, and kept moving forward.
The Power of a Growth Mindset
Being exposed to the science of coaching instilled in me the importance of risk, a growth mindset, and the need to do things differently to achieve different results. Coaching’s empirical science provided the psychological foundation I needed to succeed as an entrepreneur and leader.
Years ago, when I put that article on my fridge, I recognized that wellness is a market that can withstand economic fluctuations. As people seek relief from emotional pain and isolation, the global wellness market has grown to $6.3 trillion. Holistic approaches like coaching are gaining traction as alternatives to traditional medical systems.
The intersection of coaching science and the booming wellness market propelled my career. I’ve seen similar success stories among coaches who graduated from my program. Since the pandemic, the demand for coaching has surged as people realize that traditional systems may not be enough to support a better future. It’s up to individuals to find meaning, build resilience, and shape the future we all desire.
Transforming Lives Through Coaching
The transformation stories from my organization are just as inspiring as my own. A former sex crimes prosecutor now runs a successful sexuality coaching business, while a corporate warrior creates kits to reduce stress for healthcare workers. A television producer now coaches women using human design, and a senior engineer is developing an internal coaching program for his firm. Two former executives have also built a company focused on emotional intelligence for leaders.
These stories highlight the potential for everyone to transform their lives through coaching. Fear and uncertainty are natural, but they don’t define our futures. By looking at emerging markets, developing tactical skills, and identifying service gaps, we can find ways to contribute to the meaning economy.
You don’t have to drift aimlessly. Catch a wave and ride it to shore. Change is possible, and it’s accessible to all.
