Kroger Revives Paper Coupons with a Fresh Twist

Kroger Brings Back Paper Coupons in Response to Customer Demand
Kroger has taken a rare and thoughtful step by reintroducing paper coupons, responding directly to customer feedback. This move highlights the company’s commitment to adapting to consumer preferences while still embracing digital innovations. Rather than eliminating digital deals, Kroger has found a way to offer both options, ensuring that shoppers have flexibility in how they save money.
The introduction of paper coupons may slightly slow down the checkout process, but it is clearly a win for customers who prefer the tangible experience of physical coupons. In a statement, Kroger emphasized its dedication to making the shopping experience as seamless and rewarding as possible. “We’re always listening to our customers and working to make their shopping experience as seamless and rewarding as possible,” the company said. “Updating our coupon policy to allow both digital and print coupons reflects our commitment to their satisfaction.”
Paper coupons are now available in stores every Wednesday. Customers can pick up a flyer and either scan it at self-checkout or ask a clerk for assistance. This simple process allows shoppers to take advantage of both traditional and modern ways to save.
This decision underscores the importance of customer voices in shaping business strategies. It mirrors similar situations where public demand led to the revival of popular content, such as when a television network canceled a show only to bring it back due to fan outcry. Kroger’s response to customer requests shows that companies can and should listen when their audience speaks up.
The Power of Customer Feedback
Many customers have long preferred paper coupons, even as digital alternatives became more common. According to a study conducted by CB4, 55% of consumers use both digital and paper coupons. Additionally, 96% of consumers use coupons, and 84% say they influence their shopping choices. These statistics highlight the continued relevance of paper coupons, especially for those who enjoy stacking them with manufacturer coupons for maximum savings.
Edgar Dworsky, publisher of Consumer World, praised Kroger for creating what he calls a “super coupon.” This handout sheet includes all digital coupons and store specials on one page with a single barcode. “It’s so simple; why didn’t they do this sooner?” Dworsky remarked. The new system makes it easier for customers to access discounts without having to juggle multiple forms of coupons.
Kroger’s Coupon Policies and Rules
Kroger has also updated its policies to ensure fair and consistent use of coupons. Here are some key rules:
- Limit one store/manufacturer coupon (paper or digital) per item purchased.
- Acceptance is subject to any restrictions from the manufacturer.
- All coupons will be accepted at face value if the purchase matches the coupon description: Brand, Size, Quantity, Color, and Flavor.
- Expired coupons will not be accepted.
- Coupons presented on an app or mobile device will not be accepted. Only digital coupons found on the Kroger App or website are valid.
- Copied, blurry, altered, or unscannable coupons will not be accepted.
- Customers are limited to three redemptions of the same coupon per day, per household, unless otherwise noted.
- If the order total becomes negative due to coupon use, the balance will be added to merchandise return card.
Additionally, Internet Coupons/Print at Home (PAH) have specific restrictions: - “Free Item” Internet coupons can be accepted if all purchase criteria are met. - Only one internet/PAH coupon per item will be accepted. - Internet coupons may be limited to two redemptions per household, per day.
Store managers have the final say in accepting, declining, or limiting any coupon or offer. Kroger also offers print copies of digital coupons for any customer who requests them.
How the New Paper Coupons Work
The process for using Kroger’s new paper coupons is straightforward:
- Pick up the paper ad near the entrance.
- Shop as normal, keeping the paper deals handy.
- Have the cashier scan it at checkout or scan it yourself during self-checkout for instant savings.
This simple approach ensures that customers can easily access and apply their coupons, whether they prefer digital or physical formats. By offering both options, Kroger is meeting customers where they are, reinforcing its position as a retailer that values customer satisfaction.
