& Juliet Makes Its L.A. Debut as Taylor Swift's Album Hype Grows

Max Martin's Influence on & Juliet and Taylor Swift's New Album
Max Martin has been making waves recently, not only for his role in Taylor Swift’s upcoming album but also for his continued impact on the world of musical theater. One of the most notable projects he is involved with is the stage musical & Juliet, which recently opened in Los Angeles after its debut on Broadway in 2022. This production features a collection of songs by the Grammy-winning songwriter and producer, along with a book by Emmy-winning writer David West Read. The show is directed by Luke Sheppard and choreographed by Emmy winner Jennifer Weber.
The musical comedy reimagines what might happen if Juliet from Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet lived beyond the tragic ending of the play. It includes performances of some of Max Martin’s most iconic pop hits, such as “Since U Been Gone,” “Teenage Dream,” “Baby One More Time,” and “Can’t Stop the Feeling!” These songs have helped solidify Martin’s legacy as one of the most successful songwriters of the 21st century, having produced more No. 1 singles than any other artist.
Rachel Webb, who plays the titular role in the touring production, speaks highly of Martin’s influence on the show. “It's really cool that this musical is taking off so much because it just continues to bring visibility back to him and the people that he works with, whether it's Taylor Swift or Tori Kelly or Ariana Grande,” she says. However, Webb notes that she isn’t part of the inner circle when it comes to Swift’s new album. “You're learning at the same time we do.”
Webb had the unique opportunity of being part of the original Broadway cast as an ensemble member and a Juliet understudy before landing the lead role. She credits Martin’s involvement in the creative process for the success of the show. “Because he's a part of creating the musical itself, he had a lot of input, and we were able to learn so much from him,” she explains. “When Max Martin was speaking in rehearsal, everybody was quiet and just listening and absorbing what this pop icon had to say, because his music really does reach the masses.”
Martin attended the opening night of & Juliet at the Ahmanson Theatre, where he was joined by notable figures such as Lizzo and NSYNC member JC Chasez, both of whom have worked with the producer. Martin and his frequent collaborator Shellback are reteaming with Swift on her new album, The Life of a Showgirl, set for release on October 3. This follows their previous collaborations on albums like Red, 1989, and Reputation.
A Musical for Everyone
One of the key factors contributing to the continued appeal of & Juliet is its inclusivity and accessibility. Rachel Webb highlights how the show represents a wide range of characters, allowing audience members to see themselves on stage. “Everyone's represented on stage, so everyone in the audience has someone that they can connect to,” she says. “In addition to that, the songs and the text intertwine very easily, so it's easy to follow.”
Webb also emphasizes the importance of the show as an escape during challenging times. “It's a fun musical in extreme times that we're living in. So I feel like people love to escape at & Juliet.” The combination of catchy tunes, engaging storytelling, and diverse representation makes & Juliet a standout production that continues to draw audiences.
As the musical runs through September 7 at the Ahmanson Theatre, it will then move to the Segerstrom Center for the Arts from September 9 to 21. With its blend of classic Shakespearean themes and modern pop culture, & Juliet offers a fresh take on a timeless story while celebrating the work of one of the most influential songwriters of our time.
