Juggalos Furious as Insane Clown Posse Unveils AI Video

The Juggalos' Discontent with AI in Insane Clown Posse's New Album
Among the many musical subcultures that have emerged over the years, the Juggalos — fans of the hip-hop duo Insane Clown Posse (ICP) — stand out for their unwavering loyalty. For decades, this community has gathered around the music of Joe "Violent J" Bruce and Joey "Shaggy 2 Dope" Utsler, creating a unique and often misunderstood culture. However, recent developments involving the use of generative AI in ICP’s latest project have sparked a wave of frustration among long-time fans.
The controversy began when fans noticed what appeared to be AI-generated content in a teaser video for ICP’s upcoming album, “The Naught.” Some viewers spotted strange, garbled text in certain frames, which is a common hallmark of AI-generated material. Additionally, the video included an hourglass filled with sand and a grandfather clock featuring unrealistic, overly smooth gears — visual cues that many recognized as signs of artificial intelligence.
This discovery came at a time when anticipation for the album was high, especially given the 25th annual Gathering of the Juggalos, an event that brings fans together every summer. The AI elements in the teaser video, however, left some fans feeling disheartened.
One fan expressed their disappointment on social media, writing, “That AI clock looks dumb as f**k. You have all the money in the world. Hire a real artist.” Another, identified as a top fan on ICP’s official Facebook page, commented, “WHACK! I was REALLY hoping that wasn’t the official design... Oh, well. Hopefully it still slaps.”
A recurring theme in the comments was the growing reliance on the artwork of Tom Wood, a longtime fan who has contributed digital art for ICP for years. While much of his work predates the rise of AI, some fans have noted that he has started experimenting with digital tools. This shift has not been universally welcomed.
“I try so hard but just can't connect with Tom Wood's style or this newer approach by ICP by going completely digital with their art,” one Juggalo wrote under a video discussing the new album. “It's just off-putting as f**k.”
Tom Wood’s increasing involvement with digital art aligns with Shaggy 2 Dope’s own interest in AI. The rapper has previously engaged with an AI version of himself, a recurring segment on his podcast, “The Shaggy Show.” Similarly, the official ICP account on X has shared Studio Ghibli-style AI images of Shaggy as part of their promotional efforts for the Gathering of the Juggalos.
Fans have voiced their frustrations about these changes, with one stating, “Kinda lame they used AI instead of one of the many talented jugg artists.” Another added, “AI art is lame, when there’s many artists in the community that would be honored to be paid to draw amazing things.”
ICP is not alone in its experimentation with AI. Other musical acts, such as Wu-Tang Clan, have faced similar backlash after releasing AI-generated music videos. Meanwhile, Nick Cave initially criticized the rise of AI but later changed his stance, releasing a music video featuring an AI-generated Elvis Presley.
In each case, the reaction from fans has been mixed. Some old-school fans and AI critics express their discontent, while others focus on the content itself, regardless of how it was created. In some instances, fans even use AI to generate their own interpretations of the music.
For the Juggalos, the situation remains divided. Facebook pages are filled with a range of reactions, from amazement at AI’s capabilities to jokes about Juggalo hygiene. Despite the controversy, some fans continue to embrace the tradition, simply saying, “whoop whoop!”
