Ravens’ Running Back Room Shows Promise with Rasheen Ali

Second-year running back Rasheen Ali has been making a strong case for himself in the Baltimore Ravens' training camp, and it looks like he might be on the verge of securing a spot on the team’s final roster. His performance in the preseason game against the Dallas Cowboys was a significant step forward, and the coaching staff is showing interest in keeping him as part of the backfield.

In the 31-13 victory over the Cowboys, Ali rushed for 62 yards on 19 carries. This performance came after his first preseason game, where he had nine carries for 37 yards and a touchdown against the Indianapolis Colts. His ability to contribute in multiple facets of the game has not gone unnoticed by the coaching staff.

Head coach John Harbaugh confirmed that the Ravens are likely to carry four running backs on their roster, which is positive news for Ali. “Yes, right now the plan is to carry four (running backs),” Harbaugh said after the game. “That’s where we’re at right now. Things can change, obviously, but that’s my plan at this point.”

If the plan holds, the four most likely running backs to make the roster include Derrick Henry, Justice Hill, Keaton Mitchell, and Ali. The Athletic's Jeff Zrebiec highlighted Ali as a player on the bubble before the game, but also noted that a four-man backfield could be possible, especially given Ali's strong summer performance.

Zrebiec pointed out that Ali, a fifth-round pick last year, has shown promise during the offseason. “Ali, a fifth-round pick last year, has done some nice things this summer,” he wrote. He added that the Ravens have a history of keeping young draft picks, and they've struggled with injuries at the running back position in the past. These factors could work in Ali's favor.

However, there are challenges. If the Ravens keep four running backs, it could limit the number of players they can take at other positions. “If we keep four running backs … it just makes it one less guy that you can take at some other spot,” Harbaugh explained. “That’ll be the challenge, because there’s more than 53 guys that would be good enough to make the team.”

Ali has made the most of his opportunities through two preseason games. His 19 carries against the Cowboys were a clear sign that the team wants to see more from him. He has also been targeted three times, catching one pass for 10 yards. Additionally, Ali has contributed on special teams, including a 69-yard kickoff return in the second quarter, which was longer than any kickoff return by the Ravens last year.

Potential and Versatility

Ali's explosiveness and versatility have drawn comparisons to former NFL player Raheem Mostert. General Manager Eric DeCosta praised Ali as a "very, very explosive" player, noting his hard running, ability to finish plays, and good route-running skills. “He runs hard. He finishes his run. He catches the ball well; he can run routes; he’s a good pass protector,” DeCosta said during a post-draft availability in 2024.

The Ravens' backfield will continue to rely heavily on Derrick Henry, while quarterback Lamar Jackson brings an electrifying ground game to the offense. However, having four running backs, with Ali's potential adding depth to the group, could make the Ravens' backfield one of the best in the league.
