Honoring a Legacy: The U.S. Postal Service Commemorates Jimmy Carter with a Forever Stamp

The U.S. Postal Service has announced the release of a new Forever stamp in honor of the late former President Jimmy Carter. This commemorative stamp is set to be released on October 1, coinciding with what would have been Carter’s 101st birthday. The announcement marks a significant tribute to a leader whose life and work left an indelible mark on American history.

Carter, who passed away at the age of 100 in late December, served as the 39th president of the United States from 1977 to 1981. His presidency was marked by a commitment to humility, reconciliation, and frugality, values that resonated deeply with the American public. Known for his outsider status in politics, Carter represented a new generation of progressive Southern leaders and brought a fresh perspective to the White House.

A Celebration of Culture and Values

The Forever stamp program, which celebrates the best of American culture, places, and people, has chosen Carter as a fitting honoree. Peter Pastre, the USPS's government relations and public policy vice president, stated in a release that "it is difficult to consider a more fitting honoree than former President Jimmy Carter." The stamp aims to honor not only Carter’s political achievements but also his enduring legacy as a humanitarian and peace builder.

The artwork for the stamp was unveiled at an event held in Plains, Georgia, Carter’s hometown. Kim Carter Fuller, the late president’s niece and executive director of the Friends of Jimmy Carter, expressed her family’s pride in being part of the event. She noted that the design allows the world to share Carter’s legacy with others every day.

A Humanitarian and Peace Builder

After leaving the presidency, Carter continued to make a difference through his work with Habitat for Humanity. For over three decades, he led the Jimmy & Rosalynn Carter Work Project, helping to build homes for those in need. One of the most notable moments in this effort occurred in June 1998 when the Carters, along with thousands of volunteers, built 100 Habitat for Humanity homes in Houston during a single week. This remarkable achievement highlighted Carter’s dedication to community service and his belief in the power of collective action.

The stamp design was created by Ethel Kessler, an art director for the USPS, and features an 1982 portrait painting of Carter by artist Herbert E. Abrams. The image captures the essence of a man who dedicated his life to public service and compassion.

Expanding the Collection

Following its release on October 1, the stamp will be available at the USPS online store and at post offices nationwide. Like other Forever stamps, it will retail for 78 cents. The USPS has also announced several other new or upcoming stamps, including ones featuring American writer William Frank Buckley Jr., the Luna Moth, SpongeBob SquarePants, and the 2025 Holiday Cheer collection. Additionally, stamps commemorating 250 years of the postal service are in the works.
