Exploring the Complex Dynamics of Taylor and Steven's Relationship in Season 3

As "The Summer I Turned Pretty" Season 3 unfolds, the narrative intensifies with a heightened focus on the love triangle involving Belly, Conrad, and Jeremiah. However, one of the most intricate and challenging storylines to develop is the evolving relationship between Taylor and Steven. Creator Jenny Han has highlighted that crafting their on-again, off-again dynamic was particularly difficult due to the many possible directions the storyline could take.

Han explained that the time gap between seasons added an extra layer of complexity. “We wrote a lot of story that we never even see on screen, just so that we knew what the history was, and we knew where the fault lines were … in the relationship,” she shared. This behind-the-scenes effort ensures that the audience gets a deeper understanding of the characters' motivations and past interactions.

From the very beginning, Taylor and Steven’s relationship has been a central theme. In Season 1, Han expanded beyond the original book trilogy by introducing a romance between Taylor and Steven, despite him being in a relationship with Shayla at the time. By the end of Season 2, it seemed as though they had solidified their bond as a couple.

However, the start of Season 3 reveals a significant shift—Taylor and Steven have broken up by the time she begins her freshman year at Finch. This change sets the stage for further complications as the story moves forward. After a two-year time jump, Taylor and Belly are finishing their junior year, while Steven has already graduated from Princeton early. Their relationship becomes more complex as both are involved with other partners but continue to be drawn to each other.

A pivotal moment in their story comes when Steven is involved in a car accident following an argument with Taylor. This event serves as a turning point, prompting Taylor to realize she is ready to commit fully to their relationship. Unfortunately, by the time she decides to tell Steven, he has already made the choice to end things.

In addition to the evolving dynamics between Taylor and Steven, Season 3 introduces a new element from the books: the expanded role of Taylor's mother, Lucinda. Han emphasized that this storyline would provide viewers with a unique perspective on Taylor's relationship with her mother.

Lucinda's involvement becomes evident in Episode 3 when she asks Steven to review the books for her salon. This leads to an emotional conversation between the exes, as Steven informs Taylor that her mother's business is struggling.
