Rising Tensions and Violence Against Israeli Tourists in Greece
Israeli tourists in Greece have found themselves caught in the crossfire of rising tensions linked to the ongoing Israel-Gaza conflict. The situation has escalated, with reports of violent encounters involving pro-Palestinian demonstrators, prompting both Greek and Israeli officials to call for stronger measures to ensure the safety of citizens traveling in the region.
Attack on Israeli Teenagers in Rhodes
A group of Israeli teenagers vacationing on the Greek island of Rhodes claimed they were attacked by a knife-wielding mob in the early hours of Wednesday morning. According to their accounts, the incident occurred after they left a popular nightclub called Hakuna Matata. They were approached and asked if they were Israeli, which reportedly led to a confrontation with a large group of pro-Palestinian demonstrators.
One of the teenagers, Shachar Gutman, told an Israeli news outlet that around 30 to 40 individuals began running toward them. He described how some members of the group were beaten, others hid in bushes and stairwells, and one person was captured on video pleading not to be harmed. Gutman stated that they contacted local police, who later escorted them back to their apartment.
Police Investigation and Confrontation Details
Dimokratiki Tis Rodou, a daily newspaper in Rhodes, reported that police received a call around 4:30 A.M. about a disturbance in the nightlife area of Orfanidou Street. The investigation revealed that approximately 20 Israeli tourists, mostly between the ages of 18 and 19, had been chanting pro-Israel slogans outside a venue. This prompted a confrontation with a smaller group who responded with chants of "murderers."
The second group eventually left after staff intervention, and police recorded the details of nine Israeli nationals, all of whom departed the island the following morning.
Recent Protests and Stranded Passengers
This incident in Rhodes came just a day after nearly 1,600 Israeli passengers aboard a Mano Maritime cruise ship were stranded off the Greek island of Syros. About 200 pro-Palestinian protesters blocked the dock, preventing disembarkation. Demonstrators chanted against Israel's Gaza operation, while some Israeli passengers responded with slogans like "Am Yisrael Chai" and "Death to Arabs." The ship was eventually rerouted to Cyprus.
Greek authorities maintained that the protest remained nonviolent, and the decision to prevent disembarkation was made by the Israeli crew.
Growing Concerns for Israeli Tourists
Greece has long been a popular destination for Israeli tourists, but the situation has become more complex due to the ongoing military campaign in Gaza. Israeli authorities have issued warnings advising caution when traveling to the region.
In recent months, there have been several incidents involving Israeli tourists. Last month, Meidad Hozeh, an Israeli tourist, was attacked in Athens after using Google Maps in Hebrew. He reported being chased into a restaurant, with a mob attempting to break down the bathroom door. Police arrived, initially handcuffing him before clearing his name after reviewing video evidence.
Prior to this, Greek police arrested suspects involved in arson attacks on a synagogue and an Israeli-owned hotel. They also foiled plots targeting Jewish institutions.
Calls for Stronger Action
Right-wing lawmaker Adonis Georgiadis emphasized the need for stronger action against such attacks. He called for the activation of anti-racism laws to treat these incidents as felonies, referring to a recent pro-Palestinian attack on a kosher burger restaurant in Athens. "The blanket targeting of a people is racism," he said, adding that Greece must respond with zero tolerance.
Increased Israeli Presence in Athens
Athens has seen a surge in Israeli visitors since the start of the war in Gaza. Many travelers use the city as a way station to manage flight costs and disruptions. Despite this, travel warnings for Greece remain at level two out of four, with Israel's National Security Council urging heightened vigilance.
Impact on Tourism and Calls for Protection
Israeli officials have expressed concern over the potential damage such incidents could cause to tourism in Greece. They have called on local authorities to take stronger action to protect visiting citizens. As tensions continue to rise, the safety of Israeli tourists remains a pressing issue that demands immediate attention and coordinated efforts from both Greek and Israeli authorities.
