Israeli Settler Arrested in Slaying of Palestinian Activist

A Settler Linked to U.S. Sanctions Arrested in the Killing of a Palestinian Activist
An Israeli settler who had previously been sanctioned by the U.S. government has been arrested in connection with the killing of a prominent Palestinian journalist in the West Bank. The incident has sparked widespread concern and renewed scrutiny over the ongoing conflict in the region.
According to local reports and coverage from The New York Times, police have identified Yinon Levi as the suspect in the shooting of Awdah Hathaleen, a well-known journalist from the West Bank village of Umm al-Khair. Hathaleen’s work was featured in the Academy Award-winning documentary “No Other Land,” which highlights the struggles of Palestinians living under Israeli occupation.
Levi, who had his U.S. sanctions lifted during the Trump administration, was detained and later released on house arrest, though no formal charges have been filed against him. His actions on Monday, which involved bulldozing through fields in Umm al-Khair to expand the Israeli settlement of Carmel, were captured on video. The footage showed Levi firing multiple shots into the air.
In statements reported by The New York Times, Levi’s lawyer claimed that his client was acting in self-defense, asserting that he was shooting into the air after being attacked by Palestinians throwing stones. However, Hathaleen was not involved in the confrontation and was standing at a community center approximately 150 feet away when he was struck by a stray bullet. His cousin and another activist confirmed this account to The New York Times.
Levi was one of four Israelis targeted by the Biden administration’s State Department last year for financial sanctions. The department cited his leadership of settler groups that allegedly assaulted Palestinian and Bedouin civilians, threatened them with further violence if they did not leave their homes, and destroyed their property. These sanctions effectively blocked Levi from participating in the international economic system and froze his bank accounts in Israel.
At the time, Levi denied any wrongdoing, telling ABC News that he initially thought the sanctions were a joke. “Why would Biden care about us?” he asked. He also accused “anarchists” of provoking conflicts by disturbing soldiers and attacking animals on purpose, documenting these incidents to incite tension.
Levi has also faced sanctions from the European Union, which labeled him an “extremist settler” responsible for serious human rights abuses against Palestinians. The United Kingdom similarly imposed sanctions, citing his use of physical aggression, threats to families at gunpoint, and efforts to destroy property as part of a calculated strategy to displace Palestinian communities.
Hathaleen, whose work focused on documenting the forced expulsions and demolitions in the West Bank, was deeply mourned by the filmmakers behind “No Other Land.” Basel Adra, the film’s Palestinian co-director, expressed his grief on social media, stating, “My dear friend Awdah was slaughtered this evening. He was standing in front of the community centre in his village when a settler fired a bullet that pierced his chest and took his life. This is how Israel erases us — one life at a time.”
The killing has reignited global discussions about the ongoing humanitarian crisis in the region and the need for accountability for acts of violence against civilians. As the situation continues to evolve, the international community remains closely watching developments in the West Bank.
