Israel Readies Mass Exodus of Palestinians from Southern Gaza as War Escalates

Israel's Military Plans and Humanitarian Concerns in Gaza
Israel has announced its intention to relocate Palestinians from combat zones in southern Gaza as part of a broader military operation targeting some of the most densely populated areas in the region, including northern Gaza City. This move is part of an ongoing strategy to address security threats while managing the humanitarian impact on civilians.
The Coordination of Government Activities in the Territories (COGAT), the Israeli military body responsible for overseeing humanitarian efforts in Gaza, has confirmed that the supply of tents to the enclave will resume starting Sunday. However, no specific timeline has been provided for the mass movement of Palestinians, which remains a critical concern for both local residents and international observers.
Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz emphasized that the government is currently in the final stages of planning. In a social media post, he stated that discussions are underway to develop a comprehensive plan to defeat Hamas and secure the release of hostages. He added that once these discussions conclude, a full-scale operation will be launched, covering all aspects of the mission.
This announcement follows a recent decision by Israel’s security cabinet to approve plans for the occupation of Gaza City. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has expressed his intent to take full control of the Gaza Strip, signaling a shift in the country’s approach to the conflict.
Continued Israeli Attacks and Civilian Casualties
Despite the military operations, Israeli attacks continue across Gaza, resulting in significant civilian casualties. On Saturday, an air strike killed a baby and her parents, according to medical sources at Nasser Hospital, where the bodies were received. The family was reportedly in a tent in the al-Mawasi area, which is designated as a safe zone.
Neighbors of the victims, like Fathi Shubeir, questioned the rationale behind the attack, asking, “Two and a half months, what has she done?” Al-Mawasi, one of the most densely populated regions in Gaza, is a key target for Israel’s upcoming military offensive.
In the past 24 hours, at least 51 others were killed in Israeli attacks elsewhere in Gaza, according to the Hamas-run Gaza Health Ministry. The death toll since Israel’s offensive began in October 2023 now exceeds 62,000, though the figures do not differentiate between civilian and combatant casualties.
The conflict between Israel and Hamas began after a Hamas-led attack on southern Israel on 7 October 2023, which resulted in the deaths of 1,200 people and the capture of 251 hostages. Approximately 50 hostages remain in Hamas captivity, with around half believed to be alive.
International Response and Humanitarian Crisis
The United Nations has condemned Israel for what it describes as a “man-made” humanitarian crisis in Gaza, warning that conditions could deteriorate further if immediate relief measures are not implemented. The UN reports that more than 90% of Gaza’s 2 million residents are at risk of starvation, following restrictions on aid operations imposed by Israel. The country accused Hamas of misusing supplies, leading to the disruption of essential humanitarian efforts.
UNRWA, the UN agency responsible for relief in Gaza, has faced severe restrictions after Israel claimed that some of its staff were affiliated with Hamas. The agency has denied these allegations, but the restrictions have significantly hampered its ability to provide aid.
In response, Israel and the United States have launched their own aid mission in Gaza, operated by the US-based Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF). While the GHF claims to distribute millions of meals daily through its hubs, experts argue that this effort is insufficient to meet the needs of the population. The situation in Gaza continues to deteriorate, with urgent calls for international intervention to prevent further loss of life and suffering.
