Apple Brings Back AI Notification Summaries in iOS 26 Beta

Apple has reintroduced AI notification summaries for news and entertainment apps in the first public beta of iOS 26. This feature had been partially removed earlier this year, following concerns raised by media organizations like the BBC about inaccuracies in the summaries.

The return of AI notification summaries comes with a new warning to users. Before downloading the beta, it's important to understand that this is not the final version of iOS 26. As a result, the update may contain bugs or performance issues, including potential impacts on battery life. It’s recommended to test the beta on a secondary device rather than your primary one.

There is also a possibility that Apple might modify or remove the feature before the official release of iOS 26 later this fall.

Warnings About Summary Inaccuracies

When updating to the latest iOS 26 beta, users are greeted with several permission prompts. One of these prompts relates to AI notification summaries. The screen offers two options: "Choose Notifications to Summarize" or "Not Now." If you tap "Not Now," the prompt disappears.

If you choose "Choose Notifications to Summarize," you are directed to a new page where you can select categories for notification summaries. These categories include News & Entertainment, Communication & Social, and All Other Apps. Tapping any of these categories enables summaries for apps within that category.

Beneath the News & Entertainment category, there is a red warning that states, “Summarization may change the meaning of the original headline.” It also advises users to “Verify information.” Additionally, a warning at the bottom of the screen reads, “This is a beta feature. Summaries may contain errors.”

After selecting the desired categories, users can tap “Summarize Selected Notifications” at the bottom of the screen. If all categories are selected, the button will read “Summarize All Notifications.” For those who prefer not to use the summaries, there is an option to tap “Do Not Summarize Notifications.”

How to Turn Off AI Notification Summaries

If you decide to disable AI notification summaries, follow these steps:

  1. Tap Settings.
  2. Tap Notifications.
  3. Tap Summarize Notifications.
  4. Toggle the Summarize Notifications switch in the new menu.

You can also use these steps to re-enable the feature. However, you’ll need to select the categories again if you want summaries for specific apps.

It’s important to note that this feature is still in beta, so it may be unstable or subject to changes before the final release of iOS 26. There is no official date for when the full version of iOS 26 will be available to the general public.

What to Expect Next

As Apple continues to refine its upcoming operating system, users should stay informed about updates and potential changes. While the current beta introduces some improvements, it also highlights the challenges of integrating AI features into everyday user experiences.
