Indianapolis Officer Shot in Northwest Side Shootout

An Indianapolis police officer was shot and a suspect is in critical condition following a violent shootout on the city's northwest side. Two additional 19-year-old suspects are in custody, while another remains at large after fleeing on foot during a traffic stop. The officer was taken to a hospital in stable condition and has since been released.

The incident occurred just after 2 p.m. on July 29 when an Indianapolis Metropolitan Police (IMPD) officer was tracking a carjacked vehicle near the intersection of West 16th Street and North Harding Street. After running a license plate check, the officer followed the vehicle into the Union at 16th apartment complex. The officer activated his lights, prompting the carjacked vehicle to pull into a parking spot.

According to IMPD Assistant Chief Michael Wolley, four suspects were in the vehicle. One male passenger immediately ran from the car, and the officer attempted to take the driver into custody, seating him on the ground. At that moment, two other passengers exited the vehicle. One of them approached the front of the car and began firing a handgun toward the officer.

The officer was struck at least three times by gunfire but returned fire, hitting the suspect. He then applied a tourniquet to manage his injuries. The driver and another passenger fled into the apartment complex. Several community members came to assist the officer, and additional officers arrived on the scene. The officer was transported to Eskenazi Hospital in stable condition.

Community Response and Officer’s Recovery

On July 30, IMPD announced that the officer had been released from the hospital. Officers also provided aid to the suspect before taking him into custody. The suspect was reported to be in critical condition following the shooting.

Police found the driver and passenger suspects inside the complex and took them into custody. A firearm with an extended magazine was discovered in the parking lot, and another was found in the hallway of one of the units, where police also located one of the suspects.

The Northwest District officer who was shot has been with the department for four years. IMPD Chief Chris Bailey expressed gratitude for the community members who helped the officer during the incident. He emphasized the emotional toll such events take on law enforcement agencies.

Bailey noted that the hardest days for any law enforcement agency are when one of their own is shot in the line of duty. He praised the officer for his resilience and commitment to returning to service as soon as possible. Mayor Joe Hogsett visited the officer at the hospital, and fellow officers rallied around him.

Indianapolis Fraternal Order of Police President Rick Snyder shared sentiments of concern for the officer’s family, describing them as "shocked and scared right now." He also highlighted the importance of community support for law enforcement.

Recent Officer-Involved Shootings in Indianapolis

This incident comes just five days after the fatal police shooting of Walter McNary, 76, on the city’s west side. Police said McNary was the suspect in his wife's killing when he fled from officers and shot at them multiple times. Bailey described the attack as the second attack on an IMPD officer in less than a week by a dangerous person armed with a weapon with the intent to kill.

Violence against officers is especially troubling, as it goes against the very purpose of their job to protect the community. The recent incidents have raised concerns about the safety of law enforcement personnel.

Historical Context

One year ago, another IMPD officer was shot. On July 26, 2024, Officer Stephen Rzyski was injured while responding to a call about gunfire. Despite being hospitalized for several days, no suspect was ever arrested for the shooting.

Other notable officer-involved shootings in 2025 include:

  • July 24: Walter McNary, 76, was shot and killed by an officer after fleeing the scene of his wife's homicide.
  • March 28: Michael Hendricks, 50, was shot by officer Patrick Tieken. The incident was related to a double shooting.
  • February 25: Adam Javonta Sykes, 31, was shot and killed by officer Grant Snyder during a foot pursuit.

These events underscore the ongoing challenges faced by law enforcement in maintaining public safety.
