I'm an Entertainment Editor Who Always Guesses Movie Twists—Except This One

A Surprising Twist in the World of Dinosaurs
As an entertainment editor, I often find myself watching a lot of movies. While I wouldn’t say I watch too many, it's true that I tend to predict the outcomes of films with alarming accuracy. Phrases like “The neighbor is the killer” or “She’s secretly his sister” often pop into my mind while I’m watching. My partner isn’t a fan of this habit, especially since I used to spoil things for him. Now, I just announce, “I know how it ends,” halfway through the film, which usually results in some very unimpressed looks.
Recently, I attended a screening of the latest blockbuster, Jurassic World: Rebirth. I watched it in 3D, although I don’t think it was necessary—the 3D effects added absolutely nothing to the experience. The movie is fast-paced and filled with action, and while the plot might be a bit far-fetched, I didn’t mind it too much. After all, it's a film about dinosaurs, so some suspension of disbelief is expected. Overall, I enjoyed it—until the end.
About 30 minutes into the film, I leaned over and (obnoxiously) whispered into my partner’s ear, “I know how it ends.” He responded by thrusting the popcorn bucket my way and diving fist-first into the pretzel bites. But when the ending arrived, I was…wrong? Was I upset? No, actually, it was nice to be genuinely surprised. Do I think my version of the ending was better than what played out on screen? Absolutely. And it seems like the filmmakers missed a major opportunity for a plot twist. Let me explain (warning: spoilers ahead).
The movie’s plot revolves around the collection of DNA from three different live dinosaurs. The heroes, who also happen to be secret villains, set off on a mission to retrieve the DNA, leaving a trail of bodies behind them. However, the film starts with a completely different dinosaur altogether—a hybrid mutant that contains the DNA of multiple dinosaurs. It’s big, it’s bad, and it doesn’t make another appearance until the third act.
Naturally, my prediction was that the heroes would either fail to collect all three samples of DNA or succeed but have the DNA accidentally destroyed. All hope would seem lost, until the appearance of the hybrid dinosaur, at which point someone would realize they could get a sample from the mutant, since its DNA is a mish-mosh of multiple dinos. That would have been a twist ending!
But instead of having Scar-Jo and J.Bailey retrieve DNA from the insane killer mutant dinosaur, the film plays out exactly as expected. No twists, no surprises—especially not from the mutant dinosaur, since we knew it existed from the start of the film. They simply succeed in collecting the DNA, leading to an okay ending, I suppose.
Again, I’m not mad I got it wrong. I just wish the filmmakers had considered my suggestions. It would have made for a more memorable and engaging story.
