ICE Issues Detainer on Illegal Immigrant Accused of Killing Teen: 'Evil Crimes'

A Man Accused of Murder and Sexual Assault Faces Detainer from ICE
An illegal immigrant is now under a detainer from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) after being accused of murdering a 15-year-old boy and attempting to rape the child’s mother. The suspect, Gildardo Amandor-Martinez, 36, was reportedly involved in a violent incident that left a young life lost and a family shattered.
According to reports, the incident occurred at an apartment in Morehead, Kentucky, where Amandor-Martinez allegedly attempted to rape his girlfriend, Aleida Lopez. During the attack, he bit her left hand, armpit, and injured her arm. In an act of bravery, Luis Lopez, the 15-year-old son of the victim, tried to protect his mother. He was shot three times by Amandor-Martinez, who then proceeded to assault Lopez’s daughter, another minor, with a firearm.
Amandor-Martinez has been charged with murder, first-degree assault, and first-degree attempted rape. The case has drawn significant attention due to the suspect's immigration status and prior attempts to enter the United States. According to the Department of Homeland Security, he tried to enter the U.S. three times before successfully doing so in 2021 at the southern border. However, he managed to enter as a "gotaway" at an unspecified time and location.
The Impact of Open-Border Policies
The incident has sparked renewed debate over the Biden administration’s immigration policies. Federal immigration authorities have reported hundreds of thousands of "known gotaways" during this administration, with 670,674 cases recorded in fiscal year 2023 alone. Critics argue that these policies have allowed dangerous individuals to enter the country and commit crimes.
DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin condemned the actions of Amandor-Martinez, calling him a "rapist and cold-blooded killer" who should never have been in the U.S. She emphasized that the Biden administration’s open-border approach has led to such crimes, including murder, assault, and attempted rape against a mother and her children.
ICE has placed an arrest detainer on Amandor-Martinez to ensure he does not return to American streets and continue to harm families. The detainer is used to prevent the release of an individual from jail before they can be transferred into federal custody.
Community Response and Ongoing Investigation
The community in Morehead, Kentucky, is mourning the loss of Luis Lopez. Rowan County Senior High School posted a statement on Facebook expressing their sorrow and offering support to those affected. The school noted that Luis was a hardworking student and extended condolences to the entire community.
Jenny Frazier, communications director for the city of Morehead, said the city is working with state and federal partners in the ongoing investigation. While the investigation remains active, she stated that specific questions about ICE are directed to ICE itself. The decision regarding the detainer is made at the federal level, and the city is not involved in enforcement activities.
The Role of ICE Detainers
Detainers play a critical role in ensuring that individuals who are arrested but not yet convicted are not released back into the community before they can be transferred to federal custody. This measure helps prevent dangerous individuals from reoffending and protects public safety.
As the investigation continues, the case highlights the complex intersection of immigration policy, criminal justice, and public safety. It also raises important questions about how the U.S. manages its borders and the impact of immigration enforcement on communities across the country.
