Ian McKellen Unveils Gandalf and Frodo's Return in "The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum"

Exciting New Chapter in the Lord of the Rings Franchise
The next major addition to the beloved fantasy series is set to begin production in May, according to Ian McKellen. The actor, known for his iconic portrayal of Gandalf the Grey in the original Lord of the Rings film trilogy, shared this exciting news at the For the Love of Fantasy fan event in London. He hinted that the new movie will be directed by none other than Andy Serkis, the original actor who brought Gollum to life.
McKellen teased the audience with some intriguing details, saying, "I hear there's going to be another movie based in Middle-earth, and it's going to start filming in May. It's going to be directed by Gollum, and it's all about Gollum." This announcement has sparked a lot of excitement among fans, as it suggests a deep dive into the character of Gollum, one of the most complex and memorable figures in the Lord of the Rings universe.
A New Era for Middle-earth
Last year, it was announced that Peter Jackson, the original director of the Lord of the Rings trilogy, would be producing a new live-action installment in the franchise. Andy Serkis, who played Gollum in the original films, will both direct and star in the new project. Initially slated for a 2026 release, the film is now expected to hit theaters in December 2027.
McKellen added to the buzz by revealing two "secrets" about the casting: "There's a character in the movie called Frodo, and there's a character in the movie called Gandalf." His playful remark left the audience in awe, as they realized the possibility of seeing their favorite characters return to the screen. McKellen then joked, "Apart from that, my lips are sealed!"
Warner Bros. and the Future of the Franchise
Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav also spoke about the upcoming film during the company’s quarterly earnings call. He mentioned that The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum is a top priority for the studio, alongside other major projects like Batman, Superman, and Harry Potter. This highlights the significance of the new film in the broader landscape of the entertainment industry.
While McKellen did not confirm whether he and Elijah Wood, who played Frodo Baggins in the original trilogy, will reprise their roles, Wood was present at the fan event. He was seen smiling knowingly as McKellen spoke alongside other Lord of the Rings alumni, including Sean Astin, Dominic Monaghan, Billy Boyd, and John Rhys-Davies.
A Legacy Revisited
Since the original Lord of the Rings film trilogy concluded in 2003 with the Oscar-winning The Return of the King, McKellen, Wood, and Jackson returned to Middle-earth for the Hobbit trilogy, which ran from 2012 to 2014. While Jackson was not involved in Amazon’s The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power series, he produced the franchise’s first animated project, The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim, last year. Jackson was joined by Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens, both of whom worked on the original trilogy and are also part of The Hunt for Gollum.
Preparations Are Underway
In June, Serkis shared more details about the project with Collider, stating, "We're very early on in the process. We've been talking about the film over the course of the last year. We’re about to start a period of prep in the next few months or so. We will be shooting in the early to mid-part of next year, I guess, and then it'll be as long as it takes to shoot, which — it's a sizable movie — all ready for a December 2027 release."
This new film promises to bring back the magic of Middle-earth while exploring the depths of Gollum’s story. Fans around the world are eagerly awaiting more updates as production gets underway.
