Community Voices Raise Concerns at Downtown Safety Meeting

Over 100 residents gathered at a community meeting in Downtown Cincinnati to voice their frustrations about the rising crime rate and recent viral incident that has drawn national attention. The event, organized by the Downtown Residents Council, was held in response to months of growing concerns about public safety in the Central Business District. Attendees included local business owners, residents, and city officials who came together to discuss solutions and share updates on ongoing efforts to address the issue.

Police Chief Teresa Theetge and City Manager Sheryl Long were present at the meeting, outlining various initiatives the city has implemented to combat crime, such as the ACT for Cincy program and the street crime task force. However, attendees felt that little new information was shared regarding the specific incident that sparked widespread outrage and criticism.

Two individuals have been arrested in connection with the weekend brawl, and Theetge confirmed that three more people are still wanted by police. Despite this, many residents expressed frustration over the lack of clarity on how the fight occurred and what steps will be taken to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Criticism and Calls for Action

Theetge took a strong stance during the meeting, emphasizing her commitment to restoring order in the city. “I will not tolerate lawlessness on the streets of Cincinnati,” she stated. She also criticized the portrayal of the city in national media and the way the incident has been used as political fodder.

Steve Leeper, president and CEO of the Cincinnati Center City Development Corp. (3CDC), also spoke at the event. He acknowledged the current state of crime in Downtown but reaffirmed his support for the city’s leadership. Leeper referenced past challenges in the Over-the-Rhine area, drawing parallels between the disinvestment and crime there and the current situation in the Central Business District.

Residents raised several concerns during the meeting, including issues related to speeding vehicles and noise complaints. One attendee questioned how many 911 calls were received before the fight broke out, noting that at least one call had been made that night. Theetge admitted she did not have exact numbers but acknowledged the chaotic environment that night.

Ongoing Efforts and Future Plans

City leaders reiterated many of the same initiatives introduced in June when they announced efforts to address the “unacceptable rise in crime” across Cincinnati. These include resuming enforcement of youth curfews, cracking down on nuisance businesses, and finding ways to hold parents accountable for their children's actions.

Long discussed the city’s programming for youth, which is a key component of the plan to reduce juvenile crime. While she emphasized the importance of long-term solutions, she also acknowledged the limitations of these programs in addressing nighttime crime.

Mayor Aftab Pureval, who joined the meeting virtually, acknowledged the concerns raised by residents. He stressed the importance of ensuring that crime is under control and that residents feel safe in their community.
