Humans Outperform AI in Creativity, Study Reveals

The Evolution of Generative AI and Its Impact on Creativity
Generative AI chatbots such as ChatGPT and Gemini have seen significant advancements with each new release. These tools are now capable of answering complex questions, solving problems, coding, and even automating tasks. As their capabilities grow, so does the concern that artificial intelligence could eventually replace human workers. However, leaders in the AI industry often argue that while AI might displace certain jobs, it will also create new ones. They emphasize that AI lacks a crucial trait—human creativity. According to this view, AI simply regurgitates information it has been trained on, rather than generating original ideas.
Creativity is often considered the defining feature of human intelligence, and many believe it will be the key to maintaining relevance in an AI-driven world. That said, AI can still assist in the creative process by helping users generate content quickly, from emails and documents to images and videos. Over the past few years, we've witnessed the rise of AI-powered image, photo, and music generators that have gone viral. Yet, these creations always begin with a human idea.
Despite these benefits, a recent study suggests that combining a person with an AI tool may not be the most effective way to spark creativity. In fact, there may be an even better approach to enhancing human productivity that doesn’t involve using ChatGPT or Gemini.
Creativity Experiments Involving AI
A team of researchers from the Institute of Schaffhausen conducted a study published in The Journal of Creative Behavior (via PsyPost) to explore whether AI truly enhances human creativity. The study involved 202 university students from Germany, who were divided into three groups: human-human pairs, human-ChatGPT pairs, and human-Google pairs. All participants were given the same set of creative tasks.
The tasks included identifying alternative uses for everyday objects like pants or forks, imagining a world without food, and developing solutions for the most serious consequences of that scenario. Before and after each task, participants completed questionnaires to assess their creative confidence and perceptions of collaboration. Additionally, a panel of human judges evaluated the responses, and an AI model was used to score them as well.
Surprisingly, the human-human pairings outperformed both the AI-assisted groups in generating diverse and innovative ideas. For instance, during the "fork" task, human-human pairs produced more unique and creative solutions compared to those working with ChatGPT or Google. While the human-ChatGPT and human-Google pairs performed similarly, the results varied when judged by AI versus humans.
The Role of AI in Evaluating Creativity
The AI model used in the study rated the human-ChatGPT pairs higher than the other groups, which contradicted the human judges’ assessments. Upon further analysis, the researchers found that ChatGPT’s tendency to provide longer, more detailed responses made it appear more creative to the AI model. This highlights a potential bias in how AI evaluates creativity based on quantity rather than quality.
Another interesting finding was that only the human-human pairs showed an increase in creative confidence after completing the tasks. Participants in these pairs felt they had become more creative and believed both members contributed equally to the work. In contrast, those using ChatGPT thought the AI was the primary source of creativity, while those working with Google felt they were the main drivers.
This study aligns with previous research suggesting that consistent use of AI tools like ChatGPT may affect human critical thinking abilities. It reinforces the idea that, at least in some cases, humans are more creative than machines. Human-to-human collaboration appears to yield better results than working with an AI chatbot.
The Future of Creativity in the Age of AI
While this study offers valuable insights, it is still preliminary. More research is needed to fully understand how AI influences creativity and whether its role can be optimized. As AI continues to evolve, the challenge will be to find ways to harness its strengths without compromising human creativity. Ultimately, the future of innovation may depend on how effectively humans and AI can work together to generate novel ideas.
