Howard Stern Ends Hiatus for Live Special After Cancellation Rumors

Howard Stern's Special Announcement and the Rumors of Cancellation
On Wednesday, August 6, radio personality Howard Stern made a special announcement on his SiriusXM channel, which came as a surprise to many of his fans. The event took place during what was supposed to be his regular summer vacation from June to September. Stern had previously posted about the pause of his break on the show's official Instagram page just before going live.
The post read, "SURPRISE! Howard Stern is LIVE, with a call to fans to tune into his Sirius channel, Howard 100." This announcement coincided with a conversation between Stern and Lars Ulrich of Metallica, who had helped save the music festival Tomorrowland after a stage fire. During their chat, Stern encouraged Ulrich to reveal the big news to the listeners.
Ulrich shared the exciting update: "We are so psyched. We are so honored. We're so f------g grateful to be able to say the following statement: Metallica is getting its own Sirius Channel." Stern then added, "Could you imagine, when you started, driving around that f------g van, that you'd have your own radio channel with Sirius, this is a big deal. Channel 42 on Sirius and the SiriusXM app starting Friday, August 29."
Despite the excitement surrounding the new channel, some fans were not impressed and expressed their disappointment. One fan wrote, "What a boomer way to announce something. It isn't 2009 anymore, Metallica!" Another questioned, "How about addressing the cancellation rumors?" A third fan commented, "I wonder if this supposed news of SiriusXM canceling his show will somehow get brought up."
Stern continued to talk about the new channel, explaining, "Channel 42 right at the end of the Rock and Roll dial there, right, 42 will be Maximum Metallica, it will be called, and it comes at the end of the month." This announcement came just days after reports suggested that Stern’s long-running SiriusXM radio show might be canceled.
According to a report by the U.S. Sun, Stern’s show, which has been running for over 20 years, could face an end. A source told the publication, "Stern's contract is up in the fall and while Sirius is planning to make him an offer, they don't intend for him to take it." The source added, "Sirius and Stern are never going to meet on the money he is going to want. It's no longer worth the investment."
The source also mentioned that fans should expect Sirius to potentially make a deal to earn rights to Stern's expansive library. However, they emphasized that it's unlikely Stern will return to host the show. "After you saw what happened with Stephen Colbert, it's like they just can't afford to keep him going," the source said firmly.
This situation raises questions about the future of Stern’s show and the potential impact on his fans. While the announcement of Metallica’s new channel was met with mixed reactions, the ongoing rumors of cancellation continue to spark discussions among listeners. As the date for the new channel approaches, fans remain hopeful for more updates and clarity on the future of their favorite radio host.
