Tannuk, Steadfast Second is a unique commander in Magic: The Gathering. As the first legendary Kavu introduced, he brings a powerful ability that allows players to warp in any artifact or red creature at a reduced cost. This makes him an essential part of any deck aiming for aggressive plays and quick game-ending combinations.

Unlike traditional commanders, Tannuk doesn't have haste himself, but he grants all your red creatures this ability. His second ability is particularly valuable: it gives every red creature and artifact in your hand the option to be warped. Warping a card means you can cast it for two generic mana and one red mana, with the caveat that the card will go into exile at the beginning of your next end step.

Despite this drawback, the benefit of being able to cast powerful cards early and then recast them later makes Tannuk a formidable choice. This ability also interacts well with effects that reduce spell costs, such as Ruby Medallion, allowing for even more flexibility in deck building.

Building the Deck Around Tannuk

When constructing a deck around Tannuk, the focus should be on high-impact creatures and artifacts that can be warped in quickly. Expensive creatures in the six-to-nine mana range are ideal, as they can be warped in for a fraction of their usual cost. Once played, these creatures can attack or use their abilities before being exiled, allowing for multiple uses throughout the game.

There are several tricks to keep your creatures in play longer. For example, using Sundial of the Infinite can prevent the exile effect from triggering, letting you keep your creatures on the battlefield. Similarly, Conjurer’s Closet allows you to reuse warped creatures without needing to exile them again.

Another important consideration is the interaction between warp and cascade. Since warping counts as casting a spell, you can trigger cascade effects off of warped spells. This opens up opportunities to cast powerful cards like Maelstrom Colossus and get additional value through cascade.

Wild-Magic Sorcerer is another key addition, as it allows cards cast from exile to cascade. This makes it an excellent late-game card that can help you maintain pressure and control over the game.

Mana Acceleration Strategies

Mana acceleration is crucial in a deck centered around Tannuk. While basic mana rocks are useful, most of the acceleration comes from rituals and expensive creatures that can be warped in for extra value.

Neheb, the Eternal generates mana based on the life your opponents lose, making it a great tool for creating extra resources during attacks. Cavern-Hoard Dragon and Ancient Copper Dragon also provide significant mana when they land successful attacks, especially against opponents without flying creatures.

Mana Geyser and Jeska’s Will are two of the best rituals for generating large amounts of mana. Mana Geyser tends to produce more mana due to its ability to tap lands, while Jeska’s Will can create massive draws if you have an opponent with a large hand.

Charred Foyer // Warped Space is another key card, allowing you to cast a spell from exile for free. This synergy with Tannuk’s warp ability makes it a powerful tool for playing expensive creatures at no cost.

Drawing Cards and Managing Your Hand

Tannuk’s warp ability has a side effect that makes "wheel" effects particularly powerful. Wheel effects force each player to discard their hand and draw new cards, which can be devastating for opponents. However, since Tannuk's ability hides cards in exile, you can still cast them later, giving you a significant advantage.

Dragon Mage and Clive, Ifrit’s Dominant both provide similar effects, forcing opponents to discard while giving you the chance to draw new cards. Clive can even be flipped to become a new creature, avoiding the need to exile it afterward.

Sandstone Oracle is a different approach, allowing you to draw cards without discarding your hand. It’s a great way to catch up if an opponent is drawing too many cards. Coveted Jewel is another useful card, providing free cards and mana when warped in by Tannuk.

Deck Tech and Backup Options

A deck that relies heavily on Tannuk can be vulnerable to removal. Sneak Attack serves as a backup, allowing you to play powerful creatures for one mana at instant speed. While they need to be sacrificed at the end of the turn, there are ways to keep them in play using other effects.

Ilharg, the Raze-Boar is another backup option, offering a two-for-one deal when warped in. Extinguisher Battleship and Myojin of Roaring Blades provide board control options, with the latter being indestructible and able to trade its protection for damage to multiple creatures. These cards help maintain control and pressure throughout the game.
