The Tragic Mass Shooting in New York City

A tragic mass shooting occurred on Monday evening at an office building in New York City, resulting in the deaths of four individuals. The perpetrator, Shane Tamura, a 27-year-old man from Las Vegas, Nevada, traveled across the country to carry out the attack. According to reports, he left his home late last week and made his way to Midtown Manhattan, where the NFL headquarters is located.

The Journey Across the Country

Tamura’s journey began with him skipping his shift at the Horseshoe casino in Las Vegas, where he worked as an overnight security officer. A coworker reportedly purchased part of the assault rifle that Tamura later used in the shooting. According to NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch, Tamura drove from Las Vegas to New York City in a black BMW, passing through Colorado, Nebraska, and Iowa before entering Columbia, New Jersey, on Monday afternoon.

The FBI is currently compiling a detailed timeline of Tamura’s movements as he traveled across the country. Surveillance footage captured Tamura double-parking his car around 6:30 p.m. on Park Avenue between 51st and 52nd streets. He was seen exiting the vehicle with an M4 rifle in hand. The car was registered under his name and contained a rifle case, ammunition, magazines, a loaded revolver, a backpack, and prescription medication for Tamura.

Entering the Office Building

After exiting the vehicle, Tamura entered 345 Park Ave., a 44-story building housing offices for the NFL, KPMG, Rudin Management, and Blackstone. Inside the lobby, he shot and killed 36-year-old NYPD Officer Didraul Islam, who was providing extra security at the building as part of an NYPD program.

Multiple 911 calls were received about an active shooter in the building. The first call came in at 6:28 p.m., with shots fired shortly after. By 6:32 p.m., NYPD officers were on the scene, requesting assistance.

The Shooting Continues

Tamura continued shooting as he walked through the lobby, killing a woman who was hiding behind a pillar. She was later identified as Wesley LePatner, an employee of Blackstone. He then waited for an elevator, allowing a woman to exit unharmed before taking the elevator to the 33rd floor, where Rudin Management is located.

On the 33rd floor, Tamura shot and killed a security guard and another individual. The victim on the 33rd floor was identified as Julia Hyman. After this, Tamura fatally shot himself in the chest.

Statements from Officials

Late Monday night, Mayor Eric Adams held a news conference with Commissioner Tisch just before 10:30 p.m. He confirmed the number of victims and shared details about Officer Islam, who left behind a pregnant wife and two young children. Adams described Islam as an immigrant from Bangladesh who loved the city and embodied what New York stands for.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell sent a message to employees stating that an NFL employee was seriously wounded during the shooting but was in stable condition. He also advised employees to work from home or take the day off due to the ongoing investigation.

Additional Victims Identified

Blackstone released a statement identifying LePatner as one of the victims. She had worked in several high-ranking roles at the company for over 11 years. The Heschel School community expressed deep sorrow, calling her a "brilliant, passionate, warm, generous, and deeply respected" leader.

The 32BJ SEIU union identified the security guard killed as Aland Etienne, describing him as a dedicated officer who took his job seriously. They honored him as a New York hero.

Flags Lowered in Honor of Victims

Mayor Adams announced that all city flags will fly at half-staff in honor of Officer Islam and the other victims until further notice. New York Governor Kathy Hochul also ordered state government buildings to lower their flags and called for an assault weapons ban following the tragedy.

Ongoing Investigation

The investigation into the shooting is still ongoing, with authorities working to piece together the events leading up to the attack. Tamura left a note indicating he had a brain condition called CTE and seemed to blame the NFL, though he never played professional football. Authorities believe he targeted the NFL offices but took the wrong elevator bank.
