This advantage is more than double the total points McIlroy has accumulated throughout the entire season. However, despite this impressive margin, Scheffler will begin the final event of the season at even par—just like every other player in the field.

This setup is the result of a significant rule change made by the PGA Tour Policy Board in May. The decision was aimed at ensuring that all players competing in the season finale have an equal chance of winning the tournament, the FedEx Cup title, and the $10 million first-place prize. Scheffler himself supported this change, having previously expressed his dislike for the old format where the leader in the standings could start the Tour Championship at 10 under par.

While the final standings at East Lake Golf Club will determine where players fall in the overall FedEx Cup rankings for 2025, they won’t dictate how much money each player receives from the $100 million bonus pool. Instead, the PGA Tour has already rebalanced the distributions, awarding various amounts throughout the regular season and after last week’s BMW Championship.

As the No. 1 player in points entering the FedEx Cup Playoffs, Scheffler earned $10 million. By maintaining his top position after the BMW Championship, he received an additional $5 million. If he wins the Tour Championship, he will then claim the remaining $10 million from the $25 million that was previously reserved for the FedEx Cup champion.
