New Features Help Electric Vehicle Owners Find Homes with Easy Charging Access

Electric vehicle (EV) owners now have a more convenient way to find homes that meet their charging needs, thanks to new features introduced by Zoopla. These updates allow buyers and renters to filter properties based on whether they include home charging stations or are close to public charging points.

The initiative comes as part of a collaboration between Zoopla and British carmaker Vauxhall. According to Vauxhall's research, 40% of UK motorists say the proximity to EV charging will be an important factor when they move house. This is especially relevant given the rising number of electric cars on UK roads. As of the latest data from ZapMap, there are now 1.55 million fully electric vehicles in the country.

Despite this growth, Zoopla’s analysis of its listings in 2025 found that only 1.6% of properties explicitly mentioned EV charging. This gap highlights an opportunity for property agents to showcase a feature that is becoming increasingly essential for potential buyers.

Zoopla’s new search criteria allow users to filter properties that have home charging capabilities. Additionally, the platform now includes information on the nearest public charging points, using map and location data provided by Octopus Electroverse. This feature is similar to how Zoopla currently displays details about schools and train stations, making it easier for users to assess the convenience of a property.

Daniel Copley, consumer expert at Zoopla, emphasized the importance of these updates: “We're proud to be the first property website to offer consumers the ability to find the nearest on-street chargers to a property, and filter properties with home-charging.” He added that improving search functionality helps empower more confident decisions for current and future EV owners.

Vauxhall's survey of 2,000 people revealed that one-third of respondents would avoid a property if there was no accessible EV charging. For electric car owners, this figure jumps to 84%. More than half of those surveyed also said they would find it useful if property websites included information on the proximity of public charging points.

As the average UK homeowner stays in their property for around 17 years, many of today’s homebuyers will be looking for homes beyond the 2030 ban on new petrol and diesel car sales. Steve Catlin, managing director at Vauxhall, noted that moving house is a major life decision, and as EVs become more common, more people will prioritize charging access when choosing where to live.

Can You Install an EV Charger if You’re Renting?

Tenants interested in installing an EV charger should first seek permission from their landlord. While it’s possible to install a charger with the landlord’s approval, it’s important to have a written agreement in place. This can benefit both the tenant and the landlord, as a home charger can add value to the property.

According to the Open Property Group, adding a home charger could increase a property’s value by around 1.7%, which equates to approximately £4,840 based on the average house price. This makes it a valuable investment for both parties involved.

Will EV Chargers Affect Future House Prices?

When asked about the impact of EV chargers on property values, EV charger provider Cord stated that chargers generally add value to homes. However, some drivers may prefer specific brands, which could pose a challenge if a different brand is installed.

Cord does not see this as a major issue in the future, as most modern chargers are standardized and can charge vehicles effectively. Features like off-peak tariffs are also becoming more common. The company believes that availability of off-street parking is even more critical for EV drivers than the type of charger installed.

Cord emphasized that EV chargers are likely to significantly increase property value in the near future. In fact, they predict that homes without chargers will become harder to rent, much like homes without broadband are difficult to let today.
