Helen Mirren: Bond Must Be Male, Despite Her Feminism

Helen Mirren's Perspective on the Future of James Bond
Helen Mirren, a celebrated actress known for her role in The Queen, has shared her thoughts on the future of the James Bond franchise. Despite being a strong advocate for feminism, she believes that the next actor to take on the iconic role of James Bond must be male. According to Mirren, the current form of the franchise relies on this traditional portrayal to maintain its identity and appeal.
Mirren, who is 80 years old, recently discussed this topic in an interview with Saga Magazine. She emphasized that James Bond "has to be a guy" and that changing the gender of the character would alter the essence of the franchise. “You can't have a woman,” she stated. “James Bond has to be James Bond, otherwise it becomes something else.”
Pierce Brosnan, who played Bond in four films, including GoldenEye and The World is Not Enough, echoed Mirren’s sentiment. He expressed excitement about seeing the next man take on the role, saying, “I’m so excited to see the next man come on the stage and to see a whole new exuberance and life for this character.” Brosnan also praised the world of James Bond, calling it a gift that keeps giving.
A Shift in Perspective
In 2017, Mirren had a different view when discussing the possibility of a female actor playing James Bond. At the time, she defended the idea after Halle Berry expressed her belief that the role should never be taken on by a woman. When asked if she would consider playing Bond herself, Mirren said, “I’m too old. In my youth, that would have been great, of course. But that time was different; we could never even have imagined a woman playing that role.”
However, Mirren’s recent comments reflect a more critical stance toward the franchise. In March, she criticized the James Bond series for its “profound sexism.” She pointed out that women have always played a significant role in the Secret Service, often with remarkable bravery. Mirren highlighted the contributions of women during the French Resistance, calling them “amazingly, unbelievably courageous.”
New Project and Reflections
Mirren’s latest project, Thursday Murder Club, features her as a retired spy who leads a group of crime-solving retirees alongside Pierce Brosnan, Celia Imrie, and Sir Ben Kingsley. When asked if her character, Elizabeth, is a better portrayal of a spy than Bond, Mirren responded, “More realistic. But not so much fun as Bond!”
She added, “The great thing about a movie like this is that it reminds everyone, as an older person I have a brain. I have agency, energy, commitment, passion and intellect. It doesn't all stop when you're 40.”
The Next James Bond
As the franchise looks to the future, several actors are rumored to be in the running for the next Bond role. These include Tom Holland from Spider-Man, Harris Dickinson from Babygirl, and Jacob Elordi from Saltburn. The film will be directed by Denis Villeneuve, known for his work on Dune.
While the debate over the gender of the next Bond continues, Mirren’s views highlight the ongoing discussions about representation and tradition in one of the most iconic film franchises in history.
