Happy Gilmore 2, the sequel to the 1996 sports comedy classic, brings back Adam Sandler as the unlikely hero, Happy Gilmore. This time around, the film focuses on Happy's journey as he tries to provide a better life for his daughter by sending her to the prestigious Paris Opera Ballet School. Alongside Sandler, Julie Bowen, Christopher McDonald, Ben Stiller, and Dennis Dugan reprise their roles, while Benny Safdie and Bad Bunny join the cast.

The story begins three decades after Happy’s iconic win at the Tour Championship, which earned him enough money to save his grandmother’s house. Now, money is once again the driving force for Happy, as he wants to give his daughter the opportunities he never had. However, his path is not without challenges.

A Tragic Past and a New Beginning

Throughout the movie, Happy’s wife, Virginia Venit, appears in various forms, including as a spirit guiding him through difficult times. In reality, Virginia was more than just a love interest; she was the mother of Happy’s five children and played a central role in his life. Their relationship was marked by both joy and tragedy.

At the start of the film, viewers learn that Virginia died in 2014 when Happy accidentally hit her in the head with a golf ball. This event left Happy devastated, leading him to stop playing golf and fall into alcoholism. In a voiceover, he reflects on his struggle: “I’d never been a big boozer, but alcohol was the only thing that helped me to forget what I’d done to the sweetest woman I’d ever known.”

Reconnecting with Golf

After years of self-destruction, Happy finds a new reason to return to the game. When he learns that his daughter Vienna could benefit from attending the Paris Opera Ballet School, he sets out to earn the $300,000 needed for her tuition. With encouragement from real-life pro-golfer John Daly, Happy begins training again, overcoming his addiction and physical limitations through rigorous practice and support from Alcoholics Anonymous meetings.

During this time, Happy takes a job at a supermarket, while his sons work blue-collar jobs. His life takes a turn when the CEO of Maxi Energy Drink, Frank Manatee, offers him a chance to join a new golf league. Although Happy initially declines, he eventually returns to the sport, setting the stage for an intense rivalry.

An Unexpected Alliance

As Happy competes in the Tour Championship, concerns arise about the growing influence of Frank Manatee’s Maxi Golf League. Happy proposes a competition between traditional golfers and Maxi Golf players, but he nearly misses the team due to a last-minute twist. Billy Jenkins, the winner of the initial match, turns out to be part of the Maxi League, giving Happy another shot at victory.

The Maxi Golf players have an advantage due to a special surgery that enhances their drives, along with obstacles added to the course for entertainment. Faced with these challenges, Happy reunites with his old rival, Shooter McGavin, at Virginia’s grave. After a brief confrontation, they decide to team up against Frank, who has corrupted the sport.

A Victory and a New Future

In the final showdown, Happy’s success determines the fate of Maxi Golf. He makes a deal with Frank: if he wins, Maxi Golf will shut down, Vienna’s ballet school will be funded, and Happy will receive a new car, his house back, and an Italian restaurant for his caddy, Oscar. If he loses, he will join Maxi Golf.

Despite the odds, Happy makes the crucial putt and wins the competition. He says goodbye to his children, who are heading to Paris, promising to join them after the British Open. Meanwhile, Frank disappears after the collapse of his company, which was revealed to be causing serious health issues.

Happy Gilmore 2 is now available to stream on Netflix, offering fans a nostalgic yet fresh look at the beloved character.
